Problem with TOT Forth router, DDNS update keeps failing

Hi All,

I am having issues with a TOT Forth fiber-optic router installed at my client's house.

The idea of the setup is for him to be able to view CCTV feeds via an app on his smartphone.

I have setup the port forwarding in the router correctly, but the problem occurs when I enter the DDNS hostname credentials in the router.

The DDNS update attempts to connect but keeps 'failing' and the router seems unable to communicate with the DDNS hostname I have assigned for the client at DYN.com (See attached pic).

Practically speaking, the setup works only for the time that the current IP address is valid & that is entered manually in hostname details at DYN.com.

Typically this is done the first time around, and as I understand, it is the responsibility of the router to keep updating the DYN host name of it's current public IP address.

This is not happening; after a few days, once the public IP address changes, DYN.com is not notified of the change.

Hence, the client is unable to view the feeds anymore.

Please advise. I have read about Carrier-Grade NAT issues, is the because of the same reason?

I'd be happy to provide screenshots of the additional router settings.

Thanks All.

Indeed, I am certain of the user/pass creds.

Could it be for some strange reason that the router is compatible with no-ip only?

If you don't mind, could you advise the details of your DDNS service? Free or Enhanced & where to register?

Last night two of my friends were having problems accessing their security cameras through smartphones. They both could not log on to their accounts at dyndns. One of them has bar/restaurant the other a hotel. No-ip is working for me too. Sorry, not much help to you though.

It is possible that the router's firmware is out of date and no longer compatible with DYN. Does that router offer a custom DDNS provider setting? If it does you could try that instead of the dedicated DYN setting.

From what I recall using dydns.com, the subdomain is the username. So, for example, if the hostname is abc.dyndns.com then the user name will be abc even though you may be using an email address to login to the DYN website.

But I'm not sure it is necessarily that way.

Mine only offers no-ip, TZO and DynDNS, no custom setting, I've only ever tried the no-ip setting coz it worked for me.

Carrier-Grade NAT issues only come into play when your ISP issues your router's WAN Port with a private/reserved IP Address.

From the DynDNS help pages:

Check the WAN IP address of your router – if it looks like your WAN Address are within these ranges,

10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255
100.64.0.0 – 100.127.255.255
172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255

then you have what is known as an RFC-1918 IP address (often referred to as private addresses). You will need to contact your ISP to find out how to get a public IP address, or have traffic routed to you.

If you were able to successfully connect to the cameras from the Internet before then it's unlikely this was your issue (unless the next address issued by the ISP was a CG-NAT Address).

Usually in these cases we'll do a complete RESET of the router and reconfigure. If that doesn't solve the issue then you'll either have to swap the router with one that works, or implement another method (either implement another ddns updater on the network that will keep DynDNS accurate, or switch to a DDNS service that will work).

Does DynDNS have a PC version of the updater that you can test your credentials against?

Getting Started With Dyn Remote Access (DynDNS Pro)

Summary Step 2. If your WAN has a dynamic IP address (the address is subject to change at the discretion of the ISP), configure a device on your network (that is always on, such as your router) to update your hostname with your IP address. Dyn provides software-based updaters for Mac, Windows and Linux which provide a friendly user interface for sending these updates.

Yep, seems they do.
