Bangkok’s Erawan Shrine Bombing, Plots, Suspects and the Lack of Trust in Police

BANGKOK – More than a month after the deadly bombing at central Bangkok’s Erawan shrine, the Thai authorities have made two arrests in the case, and issued at least seventeen arrest warrants overall.

On Monday, the Thai police announced that one of the men in custody was the person caught on closed circuit television on the day of the bombing in August—the man who appeared to be leaving a bomb at the shrine. But some Thai commentators remain doubtful that the government has gotten closer to actually solving the case.

The lack of trust that the Thai authorities have arrested the actual perpetrators stems from several factors. First, in recent years the Thai police and security forces have demonstrated a pattern of problematic investigations of major crimes, whether the 2006 New Year’s Eve bombings in Bangkok, or the 2014 Koh Tao murder case, in which two foreign tourists were killed on the resort island.

In the Koh Tao case, the police initially announced that two indigent Burmese migrants, who are now on trial, confessed to the crime, but the two later recanted their confession and claimed that they only confessed after being tortured. They are now standing trial, but there are significant amounts of evidence that call their guilt into question.

Most recently, Thailand’s most prominent forensics investigator announced that DNA on the Koh Tao murder weapon does not match the DNA of the accused migrants. According to Time, “The [Koh Tao] prosecution’s case rests on DNA samples found on [one tourist’s] body that investigators say match the defendants. Defense lawyers had asked for the samples to be retested but police said the evidence had been ‘used up.’”

Until the Thai authorities are factual in their statements to the public, there will always be doubt.

All reports so far have been circumstantial, with the exception of the casualty numbers. Human trafficking rings may have been uncovered leading to the alleged bombers being caught; please show us the evidence. From day 1 it was a stated fact that the bombs were pipe bombs made with TNT, where were the photo shoots of the evidence that the BIB are infamous for? If they were using TNT, why the alleged stash of 'explosive making chemicals' that were so craftily purchased? Where was the photo shoot with pointing fingers?

Being given 'blood' money by their seniors, for doing their jobs, and being displayed on public media while there has yet to be one conviction made is an absolute disgrace, nothing less.

There are good police, despite the bad publicity that has been banded about. These are the ones i feel sorry for.

IMHO of course.

Yes it's a month on from that terrible day, but armchair detective's are not going to help solve this case. Remember this is different from tourist's being murdered on Koh Tao. Give the police as much time as they want, just as long as they prevent this tragic event reoccurring. Remember the bombing in Norway a few years back, one guy did it, that's all it takes. Violence and bombs are happening a lot all over the globe most are caused by terrorism. This is the world we live in today, sadly. Pray for a better future, we must.

Chrisinth you are completely right. As it stands there is no cast iron evidence linking those who confessed to the crime. A confession made in some darkened room somewhere means squat. There are even reports being made that he still hasn't got an acceptable interpretor yet.

Without the tip from the neighbour in the flat the rtp would still be swimming around with their head up their @$$e$ peddling the latest theory du jour. The fact reward money has been paid 3 times now is sickening.

How the rtp isn't considered for reform is laughable frankly

they got 10 million in rewards for solving this already right !

they don't really know who done it , motives , network chain etc .

SO WHY did they get the cash !! typical greedy thai mafia cops .

had a nice thai couple who worked in food market next to my old condo, they had a ipad mini stolen, had a witness & it had tracking which showed it in area of suspects residence, as it not nice neighbourhood they didn't want go sort it unless supplied with cash :-O thai couple ended up buying another in time as easier & cheaper than dealing with the scum that is RTP .
