This question has intrigued me for a long time. I have often wondered what the attraction is for so many ex-pats to come to this country. I have searched the forum for similar topics for many seconds but have seemingly failed to find the 3,412 other threads specifically on this topic.

After i have read some interesting responses from my knowledgeable forum friends on this topic i think i will research some other questions that i can't find but i think need some immediate input!

What made you come here?

Why are you in Thailand?

Reasons you came to Thailand?

Can bar-girls make good wives?

Do bar-girls have a good heart?

Can marrying a bar-girl work?

How much sin sot should i pay?

Do i pay a dowry?

can a western / thai marriage be successful?

Worked for a USA agricultural company (hardware e.g. ploughs, harvesters, tractors ect ect......), who offered me a positon overseas.

I could choose from China, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand - I chose Thailand (because the other half was Thai)..................... that was in 1988 am still here.

Its home now.

To answer the other questions:

What made you come here - answered above

Why are you in Thailand? - answered above

Reasons you came to Thailand? - answered above

Can bar-girls make good wives?

Nothings impossible - but highly unlikely

Do bar-girls have a good heart?

Intentions can be good - why not

Can marrying a bar-girl work? - question should be: do you know anyone whos has been married to the same bargirl fro more than 10-15 years? I'd reackon its possible but for every 1 successful bar girl/farang marrige there's a string of faliures. There are statisics on this subject, compiled by one of the Bkk Uni's. They don't make encouraging reading - the divorce/disaster rate is way way over the national average - it really is seriously disproportionly high - its something like 95% fail within the first 5 years, with something like only 2 or 3% lasting more than 10 - and then the faliure rate drops down quite significantly to something quite low like only 10 - 15% of those that have survived more than 10 years.

Moral is: hack it for 10 plus years and the chances are you'll keep it together.

How much sin sot should i pay? - whatever you're comfortable with.

Do i pay a dowry? -

Can a western / thai marriage be successful? - yes, but like all marriages it won't just happen. takes a lot of work - even more so in Thai/farang relationships because the cultural/religous and socio-economic ideas each have are so much more different and pronounced than they are between 2 Westerners.

But it can work - it worked with me (although it has not been easy at times) - nearly 2 decades now.
