Bangkok Bank Debit Card Stoppage

Trujillo

Recommended Posts

As of now and at least an hour ago, all Bangkok Bank debit cards were unable to be used at ANY bank's ATM machine, and I assume unable to be used to make purchases.

Apparently the entire system is down citywide, so one bank employee told me. They are not letting people into the bank branch at Meechok Plaza.

Aside from being unbelievable and vexing, it makes you wonder just how safe your "virtual" money is these days.

I needed money an hour ago for something important, and still have no way to get any cash at all anywhere.

Could this even happen in a developed country? What about people who need to use banking as a matter of importance.

This is slightly concerning.

Tried to use my Bangkok Bank debit card at the Big C 2 Hang Dong branch yesterday, no go.

Big notice in Thai stuck over the ATM machine. Asked the girl in there and told me to try at another branch. Went to Big C 1 Hang Dong Branch, it worked no problem there.

We're out of CM right now. Hubby's BB ATM was eaten by a BB ATM machine outside a Tesco Lotus in Kanchanaburi at 11:30 am today. He didn't even have a chance to input his PIN. He just stuck in the ATM card and the machine sucked it down and then the machine posted a notice "Transaction Completed" did not return the card and then a notice "system down" with a red screen.

We went to the main branch in Kanchanaburi and they didn't know anything about a problem with that machine or their ATM network. They confirmed that we had plenty of money in our account (I had our passbook with us), so the manager escorted me to the ATM outside the bank entrance and my ATM card worked just fine and we got our money. That same manager offered to make a new ATM card for Hubby, but we declined. We'll report the loss at our branch in CM when we return.

We just stopped at a PTT station 48 km west of Bangkok and their BB ATM machine is down also, with the same red screen that says "System Down"

For those that wonder how to get cash, BB has these offices called branch banks, sometimes ones in malls that stay open late. Just bring in your passbook and passport and fill out this quaint form called a "withdrawal slip" and the nice people behind the counter will give you cash. It's a throwback to the 20th century. Actually the 19th century.

Wonder how many ATM cards have been eaten today?

When traveling I always use a machine at a bank. That way if the machine eats it I can just go into the bank and get it back.

That's not true. Bank personnel cannot open an ATM machine "at will". They have to wait until the appropriate security personnel are there -- usually once a day when they fill up the ATM machine with money.

What they can do, however, is hold your lost card at the local branch and you can come back the next day to claim it. With a machine at a remote location, lost cards are sent to the corporate HQ of the bank and then, depending upon bank policy, either destroyed or sent back to the branch of the account holder.

Also, ATM machines in front of a branch bank are usually more secure and often have a security gyuard nearby. Also, I wonder if they are "hardwired" into the bank's computer system somehow, vs. maybe a satellite system for remote ATMs as evidenced by the problem Hubby had at a remote ATM in Kanchanaburi but no problems for me at an ATM in front of the bank.

I had the same problem today in Hang Dong Big C 2. ATM out of service, wife said notice said call inside. I did that, and the girl copied the number of my ATM card, asked for proof of ID, a driving licence, and said she could issue a maximum of 10,000.

Twice a Bangkok Bank machine gobbled up my card last year. Once in the Airport Plaza (not at the bank branch). Policy was to always destroy the card and you apply for a new one. Second time was at a bank branch, teller simply locked her till, went outside, unlocked the ATM, removed my card and about 20 others, and after showing my ID, which she confirmed on the computer, she returned my card.

I have just been attempting to transfer money between two Bangkok Bank accounts using their Internet iBanking. That doesn't work at the moment either.

I did manage to get my transfer to process. Perhaps things are improving?

I have just transferred money from BKK Bank to my KBank as I need some beer vouchers burp.gif for tonight. So the transfer service appears to be working at least.biggrin.png

Banks all around the world will go down for technical reasons at some time. I always have accounts with two different banks. My wife also has anothe account. My main account is with Bangkok Bank but sufficient money is with another bank with enough funds to see me through for six weeks.

Not at the bank of Bangkok in KSG they went in and opened the machine up and gave me my card right away. No problem

Hi Nancy,

At SCB on Nimman the tellers open and restock the ATM's that face the street. I have watched this many a time while signing 4,000 papers for something or another.

No visible or additional security around... just young ladies in tight purple uniforms changing boxes. Boggles the mind.

I believe it has happen twice with the Royal Bank of Scotland

in recent times, so its not only Thailand.Money ,Banks,Safe?,its

a worry.

regards Worgeordie

Bank of Melbourne earlier this week, another major Aus bank a few weeks ago; it happens all the time, all over the world.

My view on this is similar to something I posted a couple of days ago about our total reliance on the internet. We also have a total reliance on ATM's. Almost 30 years ago in New Zealand we got caught out; I changed branch of my bank the day before Good Friday, having no idea that it would affect our ATM card. We had 30 cents to our names until the following Tuesday. We actually took some beer bottles back to get enough money to buy milk. Since then, I always have the equivalent of $500 squirreled away somewhere in case this happens again, and I always have a couple of thousand baht in my purse in case the EFT POS doesn't work in Tesco or Rimping I can pay cash for all or most of my shopping.

Total reliance is not a good thing for anything important, but we've fallen right into the trap.

A few times . Mine has been eaten once in Bangkok when lightning struck and power was interupted. I had no backup card. Now I have options.

Actually, I like the "quaint" system. Perhaps I'm a throwback too.

There are plenty of stories on TV about card skimming, identity theft and system glitches such as this.

I've never heard a story about criminals stealing your passbook and passport simultaneously, then going into a bank disguised as the passport photograph and forging your signature in front of the bank teller.

My ATM card is for emergency use only.

Things like this will happen ever and ever again, no matter if a first or third world country. A good reason to be against wiping out cash currency. Some countries are quiet advanced in this, maybe i'm somewhat oldfashioned, but i'm horrified by the idea to be able to pay/buy anything only with a functionable smartphone, especially with increasing planned obsolescence.

I guess I must stand corrected on my earlier post that the Bangkok Bank personnel can't open an ATM machine in front of their bank "at will" if it has just sucked up your card.

Just for the record, mine has been eaten just once. I got cash from a machine in front of a branch bank and then took too long to count it and get myself organized while the machine was beeping at me to remove the card. After about 30 seconds it gave up and just sucked it back in. I guess it figured I'd left. It wasn't my "home" branch, but one across town where I wasn't known. Maybe if I'd been this scatter-brained at the KSK branch, they would have humored me and opened up the machine to give me back the card.
