Change Language on Kindle Paperwhite.

Featured Replies

I bought a brand new Kindle Paperwhite privately, and when I go to the Kindle Store, everything is in what looks like Chinese.

I have the language set to English.

As I am in Bangkok for a few days, anyone know who can change the language to English to

allow me to buy books from the Kindle store? Zeer perhaps?

Is the device registered to use your Amazon account?

Try unregistering and reregister.

It's supposed to use the amazon store associated with your credit card country of origin but some people find they get geolocated to the nearest Amazon store, even if they have a US-based card registered on the US Amazon site they're device associated with the UK Amazon store because it was closer during the registration process)

EDIT:

Purchasing books from another country’s Kindle store

"if you have an address on your Amazon account that is in another country, you can change your Kindle settings to shop in that country’s Kindle store. Log on to your Amazon account, go to the Manage Your Kindle page and go from there."

I shall try and talk you through it.

From the home menu, press menu.

1. Settings (5th one down) just above a line.

2. Device Options (4th one down) or bottom one.

3. Language Options (1st one) Then you should get your list of languages.

Hope this helps.

Sorry I just realised you said you had the language set to English

Your first question, Yes. I have unregistered and reregistered again. It is just the same.

Yes the kindle is registered in English. it is only in Kindle Store

it is something like Chinese.

I won't be able to buy books until I get the Kindle Store language problem fixed.

So... let me refer back the EDIT of my unhelpful post, and reiterate with this postscript taken from the amazon forum: Post 1 / Post 2

Similar problem with Chinese, but not in the main part of the Kindle device.
I'm working in Hong Kong for a couple of years and I picked up a Kindle Paperwhite, locally. I easily set the menus to UK English, but when I go to the Kindle Store, everything's in Chinese, including all the books. Is my Kindle stuck this way? I cannot read Chinese. What can I do?
Thomas Spencer says:

Ok, so I went to the Amazon website (my account has been with Amazon.co.uk for years) and thence to 'Manage My Kindle'. There was no country set in the 'Country Settings', so I just selected 'UK' and the store on my Kindle automatically updated. Problem solved.

N. Soontornvinate says:
This happens most likely because your Kindle Store has no definite country setting. I registered my new Kindle this morning from Thailand and encountered the same problem as Mel. What I did was to sign in onto my Amazon account on my laptop and it now works fine for me.
Your Account > Manage Your Kindle > Country Settings

As I understand it, once you have set a country for your Kindle it should go to that store no matter where you are in the world.

This also happens to me when I registered Kindle paper white from Thailand. I fixed this issue by changing "Country Setting" from "none" to "Thailand"
On Amazon website. Your Account --> Manage Your Content and Devices --> Country Settings --> Thailand.
On Kindle.
From Home, tab Menu icon and then tap "Shop in kindle Store". The language was automatically changed from Chinese to English
