BANGKOK: -- Bangkok was lashed with heavy downpour early Monday morning bringing traffic chaos to many main roads leading to the inner area of the capital during the morning rush hours.

The heavy rains that covered almost all districts of Bangkok started at about 4 am Monday, caused floodings on many roads, particularly Lardprao, Phaholyothin, Ngamwongwan, Krungthep Kleetha, Sri Nakharin, Sunthornkosa, Rama 3, Sukhumvit, and Nawamin.

The heavy rain lasted an hour later, but left office workers leaving home for office since 6 am stranded on the streets for hours as flood water remained undrained.

Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra inspected several flooded roads early in the morning, particularly on Lardprao from Soi 122 to Soi 94 where water level was measured at 10-30 centimetres.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Flood Prevention and Control System Centre said rains began in Bangkok from 1.00 am till 7 am with the heaviest rain reported in Prawes where rainwater was measured at 121.5 mm, followed by Rajburana, 106.5 mm, Klong Toey, 90.0 mm, Yannawa, 86.5 mm, and Sathorn 77.00 mm.

Flooded areas included Lardprao from Soi 67-101, Yaek Taopoon, Wat Pho, Chimplee road, Suan Plu market, Ha Yaek na Ranong, Amornphan market, Hong Kong-Penang market, Lamluka, Sukhumvit, and Raminthra.

Director of the Hydro and Agro Informatics Institute Royol Chitradon said the rains that happened during this period was what meteorologists described as “cloud brush” phenomenon same as what happened last week.

He said the cloud which caused heavy rains were blown by winds to Bangkok from the East coupled with clouds that formed in Bangkok.

Rains from such clouds posed high chances to cause flooding in the capital, he said.

It's time to start selling amphibious vehicles, a Fortuner to drive to office is not high enough.

One day all those big new cars will float around and the BMA will be blamed.facepalm.gif

rain came from cloud?

rain came from cloud?

Yep, great to know that we can all learn something new here everyday :)

"...what meteorologists described as “cloud brush” phenomenon..."

Try Cloud Burst!

All it takes is a drizzle for the chaos to start.

I like the " cloud brush" much more than the "cloud burst"

Rain or no rain, traffic is every day a chaos anyway.

The navy to the rescue!

Maybe the Thai people will learn that when you build something you have to do it to a certain standard. Old saying "shit does not flow uphill". It can't drain away if it has no where to go. The Egyptians learned this 5000 years ago. Wonder when Thai engineers will?

Rain comes from clouds? Do they have any proof to back these claims up?

Next thing there will be a claim that the Sun makes it hot.

This is one of the reasons why Bangkokians deserve a higher salary then the rest of the country. We need high cars or a new one every year after the rainingseason. Our cars are also boats and we live in them many hours a day dued by the jammed traffic.

Soon we'll see many expensive cars floating around here, then let's see who's responisble. It has to happen first before they wake up.
