Four injured in car plunge from Union Mall’s carpark

BANGKOK: -- Four persons in a car were injured when their car plunged from the second floor of Union Mall shopping centre's carpark building on Lardprao road last night.

The incident happened as the driver, identified as Ms Duangkamol Nakyotham, 36, was accelerating her Mazda car to G3 floor for parking.

But the escalator got stuck after climbing to the G3 and was unable to control it. The car crashed into the iron railing fence and plunged to the ground near the toll booth.

The car fell with its head hitting the railing on the first floor first before crashing on the ground with its rear bumper.

She was unhurt but her four friends were injured with broken legs and arms.

All were later rescued and admitted to Paolo Memorial hospital where all are declared safe.

Ms Duangkamol said she used to encounter escalator stuck before in the car and had it maintained at a service centre.

The police are examining the actual cause of the incident.

"The car fell with it's head hitting the railing."

I've heard that they are working on self driving cars, but since when did cars start having heads.

I assume "escalator" is meant to be "accelerator".

Then write the word accelerator, this is taken from an English paper printed in Thailand, but the level of English is really bad, and like the other poster said when did a car have a head (maybe a head gasket)???

How difficult is it to turn the ignition key? Hit the brakes and push the clutch or put the automatic to "N"? Pull the handbrake?

Note to self: Don't buy a Mazda.

Another fine reporting Job by Thais cheesy.gif

Don't they get it that all the Farang that Speak and write English and come to this forum want real English not pigeon English .

But then its because they think they know how to report in English from the INTENSIVE English courses at University gigglem.gif

Another spectacular copy editing job. Perhaps the new acquiring group will see this in short order and make some changes for the better.

Thai Visa did not write the article, Thai PBS did, perhaps you can contact them and suggest they try to do a better job at editing prior to posting, you can contact them here: http://www2.thaipbs.or.th/contact.php

Accelerator sticking on some vehicles has been known to happen in the past even in 1st world countries... Usually leads to a recall but maybe not in Thai...

And with more cars on the road, this problem will escalate whistling.gif

From the Mazda Owner's Manual - When falling from a great height, the gear should be shifted to "P" (Parachute) for gentle landing.

How would pulling the handbrake help? The handbrake manually activates the rear brakes only, Stepping on the brake pedal as normal gives hydraulic/power assisted FOUR wheel braking, (front disc brakes) which would give far more stopping power than using the handbrake. Unless you were expecting her to do 180 degree turn, which wouldn't have worked either under acceleration in a fwd car. Some things aren't as obvious as they seem, especially in a panic situation. blink.png

I assume you mean pidgin English.

Pigeon English is only spoken by birds. :)

Would you like some more stones for your glass house?

My guess she panicked when she hit the gas instead of the brake..

and continued to hit the gas thinking it was the brake

she probably never touched the brake - see no brake marks

She refuses to take responsibility for her fault - my guess

Well, you noticed that I mentioned this as last resort? Anyway, there is a hope that a good handbrake might stall the engine - as long as it is not full throttle. At least on a car with rear brakes and rear drive.

Although unlikely, it is possible; Link

"Sudden acceleration is one of the most deadly automotive defects in history. It occurs when a car’s electronics cause the throttle to go wide open, making it impossible for the driver to return the car to idle if it remains in gear. It also severely limits the ability of the brakes to bring the vehicle under control -- leaving the unsuspecting driver at the mercy of a runaway car. Thousands of people, including drivers, passengers, and innocent bystanders, have been killed or seriously injured in sudden acceleration accidents."

When all the dust and debris settles on this episode, I suspect it will be determined that the "escalator" on the woman's car was haunted by a ghost.

And it was a ghost that put its ghostly foot on the "escalator," causing the car to "escalate" right off the upper level of the parking structure. tongue.png
