China launches probe into Volkswagen

BEIJING: -- China has launched an investigation into Volkswagen, saying it’s highly concerned about the diesel emissions scandal.

VW says it’s recalling nearly 2,000 imported vehicles in China to ‘correct the engine software’.

The relatively low figure follows initial checks;

China’s environment protection ministry says locally produced vehicles which account for the bulk of VW sales are not affected.

The vast majority of cars sold in the country run on petrol.

But VW could come under further scrutiny – it has plans to boost output in China and is investing 18 billion euros to increase production capacity.

Given the current air pollution in Chinese cities, I doubt a few VW's on the road will make much difference. Hope the 'probe' doesn't hurt!. biggrin.png

Like pollution is a major concern of the Chinese government.

From Jan. 1, 2015, China finally adopted the national stage 4 emission standard (NS4) - the equivalent of Euro 4 standards - on all diesel vehicles. If VW has cheated on its diesel emissions to qualify, I doubt China will allow a grace period for VW to make a fix and likely force VW to take back all noncompliant diesel vehicles.

It's one thing for the Chinese government policies to affect national health but different when it comes to foreign complicity. VW might get banned entirely from China if it cheated.
