Can I apply tourist visa( 6 months)to retirement visa in Chiangmai?

Featured Replies

Hi there, my partner have apply tourist visa (6 months) from UK. Is any possibly to apply for retirement visa in Thailand. We are mainly live in Chiangmai. Thank you for any information in advance.

I an only answer for the Phuket Immigration office, it may be different for other immigration offices, but from last week it is not possible to apply for a Non 'O' immigration visa at the moment. It may change later, who knows? TRy Penang if you're desperate.

To apply for an extension of stay (not a visa) based on retirement you need to be in Thailand on a non-imm O entry. It would probably be less of a hassle to actually enter the country using a non-imm O visa. Otherwise, if you are here on a tourist visa you can first apply for a conversion to a non-imm O entry at immigrations. Some regional offices can accept the application for conversion and forward it to Bangkok for approval. Some offices cannot accept the application for conversion and you would need to travel to Bangkok to do the conversion and it would require two visits.

During the last 30 days of the non-imm O entry, you would go to the immigrations office that serves your residential area and apply for the extension of stay based on retirement. The requirements for the extension would include Baht 800,000 in a Thai bank for at least two months for the first application or an affidavit from your embassy of an income of at least Baht 65,000 a month in income or a combination of the bank and income methods.

"TRy Penang if you're desperate."

If they are in Chiang Mai, Penang would not be the first choice for a visa and he should either be able to do a non-imm O conversion from CM or by traveling to Bangkok.

A change of visa status from at tourist visa to a non immigrant visa entry can only be done in Bangkok and a few nearby offices that accept the application.

To do the change requires 2 trips to Bangkok immigration 15 days apart to get the visa/entry stamps.

If in Chiang Mai it would easier to make a trip to Vientiane to get a single entry non-o visa.

While I feel some trepidation at contradicting an acknowledged expert in the field, I converted from a tourist visa to a Non O visa to a retirement visa all through Chiang Mai immigration. Was done through an agent. Have never been to Bangkok for any immigration requirements.

When did you do this conversion?

BTW

There is no "retirement visa" so I presume you have an "extension of stay based on retirement" (It is not a "visa")
