webfact
South Africa: arrests made but students say protests will go onJOHANNESBURG: -- South African students protesting about a 10.5 percent hike in tuition fees have reportedly refused to be addressed by the secretary general of the ruling ANC Party.Up to 3,000 people gathered outside the party’s headquarters in Johannesburg.Local media reports suggest students urged Secretary General Gwede Matashe to sit down and listen to them.In Cape Town at least 30 students were arrested in what have become the country’s largest student protests since the end of apartheid.Hundreds stormed the parliament, while in Johannesburg, the crowd brought the city to a standstill. They say they will continue demonstrating until the increase is scrapped and fees are frozen.President Jacob Zuma is due to meet student leaders on Friday (October 23). -- (c) Copyright Euronews 2015-10-

Suradit69
One of the key driving forces in the fight for majority rule in SA was the students who rebelled against the inadequate education they were permitted under Apartheid. If anything is essential to developing the nation going forward, it would be easy access to education. It seems the ANC has forgotten its roots and who the "revolution" was intended to benefit. It looks like once again the youth need to make a wake-up call to those in power ... nearly 40 years after the SOWETO uprising in 1976. What is significant about this is the fact that you will find a lot of these students will be from a group of what is called "free born" ie they were born after the end of apartheid and they only thing they know is an ANC govement and they are getting fed up with the lies, BS and broken promises Zuma and the old school ANC "communists" needs to be put out to pasture and the heir apparant - Cyril Ramaphosa, made president
TimmyT
I can imagine how all left NGOs would shout if it was white government who arrested black students, who are convinced they are entitled for everything. but the government is black and very pro-American.. what a hard choice for Human Rights Watch and Amnesty international! TimmyT
somebody in SA thought that after a first black president will take power money will grow on trees... instead of this white minority runs away (in fear of death), Afro-Africans from the whole continent conquer buildings in cities, make squatting there, shit in elevator shafts and the country quickly becomes a failed state. Zimbabwe (ex-South Rhodesia) is far ahead! There is still something to strive for! Cecil Rhodes is spinning in his grave like crazy... Before the election I worked with a well educated Xohsa guy and he was telling me the ANC where promising a Mercedes and a big house in the suburbs for people who voted for them....seems that was a broken promise as well

Soutpeel
Forgot to say: Please google/ youtube Zuma on reading numbers... I am still wondering HOW he got to where he is today....... As you may or may not know, the only current criteria for becoming President was that you spent time in jail on Robben Island....there is a list of the incumbent Presidents....as mentioned Cyril Ramaphosa is next on that list....
