Sheryl
Can anyone suggest a place in Bangkok that sells good quality, authentic Hmong crafts? Specifically looking for an applique quilt Thanks!
berybert
There is a Thai craft fair happens once a month at the Jasmine city hotel. They have locals come down from the hills to sell their goods in the basement. http://www.thaicraft.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=3&Itemid=4 That is a list of upcoming dates. I have had a walk around the stalls here before and there is some pretty impressive stuff.

Can't imagine some peasants travelling to Bangkok then renting the basement of a large hotel and selling their wares for the same as in their villages. Guess you could always fly or bus upcountry to buy at normal price. This is done to help these people earn a crust.
maderaroja
Or, you could buy from someone who lives near the mountain people. For instance, there are many shops that sell mountain crafts in the Chiang Mai province because the mountains are near to Chiang Mai. However, if you go downtown Chiang Mai (Muang), the prices will be higher than in the outlying areas of the province.
zaZa9
Ive seen hilltribe fabric handcrafts extremely cheap in the towns outside CM. It may be worth the trip up there if you were going to 'theme' a room or house ...
Sheryl
Actually just looking to replave a large applique quilt that I've had for more than 30 years. Was hoping there'd be a store in bkk but it looks like I'll have to wait for the fair.
