PM pleads for public understanding of the need of energy security

BANGKOK:-- The government has appealed for public understanding of the need to implement public utility projects such as power plants to enhance energy stability and prosperity of the country.

Maj-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd, spokesman of the government said on Sunday that the government had been trying to push several development projects aimed at ensuring prosperity, enhancing security and improvement of livelihood of the people.

However, he said there were people who misunderstood some of the projects such as coal-fired and garbage-fuelled power plants due to inadequate information given to the public by the government.

To bridge the gap of misunderstanding, the spokesman said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha had instructed authorities concerned to stage public forums to gauge public opinions and for the exchange of views between the public and the government.

Also, he said the prime minister appealed to members of the public to be more broad-minded and to be more receptive to information from the government instead of resisting against the projects for the sake of protesting.

In developed countries, the spokesman said the people there attached much importance to environment problem but, at the same time, they had confidence in the safety measures and new technology which would mitigate environment problem.

The government, he said, has attached great importance to ensure long-term energy security for the country and, at the same time, to ensure the safety and health of its people from environmental impacts from development projects.

How do coal fired power plants 'ensure the safety and health of the people from environmental impacts' ?

Basically another plea to ''leave me alone to do what i want to do, stop resisting me and 'understand'.... and if you don't, thou shalt suffer !

Well if they did go with China, it would be the French nuclear wizards and french design..the deal would be similar to what the UK has just signed with China over Hinkley point.....but nice attempt at a bash none the less

Thailand could get some nuclear plants for free.

Just let the French government hire the Chinese government to build and own them, then guarantee them double the market rate for at least 35 years. Plus make sure the contract is attractive enough for them by making sure you will get stung for an enormous amount in the process as things don't go to the over-optimistic plan (which you can keep quiet for now).

OK you have completely sold off ownership and control of the most fundamental need of the country and possibly put yourself at their mercy in the future, but if the country is broke and you might not be in power then anyway, it's an easy way out.

It's good enough for the UK.

But you do want unlimited cheap electricity 24/7/365, like most people.

Coal and nuclear power are being pandered to third world countries just like asbestos and DDT. There are a many logical and viable energy alternatives that are available and should be initiated. Energy cannot be a 'business as usual' proposition.

The people misunderstood the inadequate information given by the government.

This piece of propaganda is about as well written as the junta is honest in its dealings with the people of Thailand.

If the people resist, then maybe it's because they see through the misinformation.

"Staging" public forums without public participation has become a trademark of the current government.

And there are more being built. Madness!

The junta should enlist someone else with the credibility, knowledge, expertise to explain in more details rather than a junta deadpan mouthpiece like Sansern. A non military man will be a good start.

There are many things that the government could do to help the rural areas to reduce their reliance on grid electricity. But rural usage pales into insignificance compared to the big cities and their shopping malls (as an earlier poster mentioned). The cities require, and will always require into the foreseeable future, big generators, whatever the source of the power, be it nuclear, gas, coal or garbage. NIMBYs will moan, but unless there is a mega change in lifestyle, big power-stations are needed "full stop".
