rooster59 Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Redshirts remember their hero Nuamthong Praiwan in ninth-year anniveraryBANGKOK: A small group of redshirt members of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) this morning held a brief memorial service at the pedestrian overpass in front of Thai Rath newspapers headoffice to pay respect to their hero "Nuamthong Praiwan" who committed suicide there to protest military coup nine years ago. The UDD members, dressed in black, came to the place they had built and called Sadom-anusorn” memorial place since 8 am in small groups to avoid breaking the military junta’s order banning political gathering. It was until 9 am when their leaders who included Jatuporn Promphan, the UDD chairman, Nattawut Saikua, the UDD secretary-general, and Mrs Tida Thavornset, former UDD chairman, showed up in black suits with flower wreathes to lay at the place in remembrance of the nine-year anniverdary of their hero’s death. The quiet memorial service was kept under the watchful eyes of the policeband soldiers who were deployed to keep off any untoward incident. All the UDD leaders and their members later dispersed.UDD chairman Jatuporn said briefly that the wreath laying today was the duty of UDD to show respect to the spirit of Nuamthong Praiwan every year as the fight of the people during that day was a great sacrifice and he would remain a hero in the heart of all UDD members. All UDD leaders later parted and dispersed peavefully with no untoward incidents. trogers Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 And those farmers who committed suicide because the Red Shirt govt did not pay them are not even remembered?
bangrak Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 'Their hero', hmm! What a distasteful political recuperation this is, there were no redshirts, no UDD, 9 years ago, as Thaksin had no 'reasons', yet, to start giving out big money to pay hordes of thugs for creating havoc! Really not so sure that Khun Nuamthong would have approved, at all, of Jatuporn, Nattawut, Weng and Tida nor other UDD firebrands' 'actions' in 2009/2010, and in 2012/2013, or of any of the violences perpetrated by the redshirts (and affiliated men-in-black) then, when he was indeed an inflamed idealistic defender of liberties symbolically sacrificing his own life for his principles, that is?!
zaphod reborn Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Jatuporn Promphan, the UDD chairman, Nattawut Saikua, the UDD secretary-general, and Mrs Tida Thavornset, former UDD chairman Too bad this bunch of losers didn't have the courage to martyr themselves like their hero.

TKDfella Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 I really do have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, yeah okay go and remember someone but then why not do in the temple grounds where the remains are? Paying respects at some artificial 'shrine' might be an act of defiance or is it provocation? The self exiled person has shown true undesirable characteristics (I'm trying to be polite)and needs to be forgotten though I don't suppose that will happen.

Mudcrab Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Red shirts showing up as men in black.......interesting symbolism. Another subliminal message from the square headed one?
Wilsonandson Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Commiting suicide is not a hero's death. Poor guy must have been brain washed to do something like this.
halloween Posted October 31, 2015 Posted October 31, 2015 Commiting suicide is not a hero's death. Poor guy must have been brain washed to do something like this. Could it have been a severe attack of conscience? Not everyone can live with being the mercenary lackey of a venal criminal.
