Thai students win at Manila maths contest

BANGKOK: Thai students have pocketed one gold, three silver and four bronze medals at the 2015 Challenge for Future Mathematicians contest in Manila.

The four-day event ended on Thursday.

The pupils were congratulated by Thai Talent Training project head Phumthep Khlang-urai upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Friday night.

Ranchanat Rungrojnimitchai of Khon Kaen University Demonstration School won gold.

The silver medallists were Chaithat Tanprawat of Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary School, Panthat Kanokwaranont of Bangkok Christian College and Chaochon Rattanamangalanont of Chon Buri's Chonradsadornumrung School.

The bronze medallists were Chanidapa Pitchayasaowapak of Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary School, Wachirawit Angkhathawanich of Bangkok Christian College, Panna Klankasem of Assumption College Rayong and Pat Poungkerd of Bangkok's Panyarat High School.

A team comprising Ranchanat, Chaithat, Chanidapa and Wachirawit won a trophy in the Middle Primary Division team competition.

Another team - Panthat, Panna, Warich Cheusa-art of the Chiang Mai-based Prince Royal's College and Rath-roj Thamrong-opas from Bangkok's Amnuay Silpa School - won the second runner-up medal in the Upper Primary Division competition.

In the individual contest, the Philippines won eight gold, 12 silver and 22 bronze medals, followed by Vietnam with one gold, four silver and three bronze; Thailand with one gold, three silver and four bronze; Malaysia with one gold, three silver and two bronze; and Indonesia with one gold and nine bronze medals.

This is interesting news given the report that has recently been released regarding Thailand's lacking mathematical capabilities.

They didn't say whom they were competing against,,, anyway, Mensa material they're not....

in Thailand, all the math you need is enough to calculate the illegal payments and the

commission...

Let's wait for medals in foreign languages!! Oh dear I doubt many of us will live long enough to hear about those!

I am not buying it........

Sorry can't believe that, what next they win an English speaking competition.

Some people underestimate the young hi-so Thai intelligence.... Since this contest was in the Philippines, they probably won it by bribery... :)

I'll be impressed when/if they win a contest in the eu or the uk

To those that placed in the Math competitions my congratulations.

...what's with all the Christian Schools in Thailand....

...what's with all the Christian Schools in Thailand....

They are as money oriented as most businesses. The poor reputation of the Thai public school system is so deplorable that parents go ino debt to get a stundent into private schools. The use of the term ''Christian'' in a school name implies honesty to many and they may want their children to be taught charity toward others as its not real apparent in this society.

There is one christian school in CM who was reported by one of its adminstrators as having 30,000,000 dollars on deposit in banks that they could loan out to build another International school with all the bells and whistles of a unversity campus, pool, gymn, track, football stadium/field, etc

I doubt these schools pay much if any tax on earning, while charging huge sums for students to be accepted, tution yearly uniforms, etc. The experience I have had it is not money well spent but its the trendy thing it seems. Can not let the Jones get a step ahead of our family, can we?

Thank you for providing the context. The story makes more sense now. Of course the Thai media will do a lot of flagwaving, but useful to know the stats.

Not one Chinese or Japanese, Singaporean, Korean, Taiwanese etc etc contestant to be seen .... yea big big achievement. rolleyes.gif

Oooh, everyone gets a shiny piece of metal, just like the special Olympics. clap2.gif

Now why did the 2015 Challenge for Future Mathematicians (CFM) contest restrict the invites? facepalm.gif

Japan, China, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea did not participate. These are the countries that typically dominate the regional math and science competitions. whistling.gif

When was the last time anyone of you won any medal? Or for that matter, won anything using your talent or skills?

I got one for scepticism last year...
