There are thought to be at least two survivors, a member of the crew and a child.

It is not clear how many were on the Russian-built aircraft and how many on the ground. Local fishermen were in the area at the time.

The plane is thought to have been heading for Paloch in Upper Nile State.

JUBA: -- Eyewitnesses say dozens of people have died after a cargo plane crashed on take-off at the main airport in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.

According to an official, three of those on board survived the ordeal. Reports suggest one survivor may have been a child.

The Civil Aviation Authority says the number of victims is still being counted. However official documents state eighteen people were registered aboard the flight and reports suggest some people on the ground were also killed.

Bodies, cargo and debris from the Russian built turbo prop plane could be seen strewn along a bank of the White Nile River.

The Antonov-12 B turbo prop plane, which is said to have belonged to Juba-based freight and logistics firm Allied Services Limited, is thought to have been heading for Paloch in Upper Nile State.

Air crash investigators, in the Sudan, certainly dress casually!

It's been a bad week for Russian aviation, although on this occasion I believe there may have been only one Russian national on board.
