Can you fly domestic with visa expired?

Featured Replies

Do they check your date of you want to fly from Chang mai too bkk and then bkk to London?

I want to pay the overstay leaving bkk but could i fly there without being arrested at cmx?

They only look at your passport photo page for identification purposes when you travel on domestic flights.

If your visa is expired I would take the train to bkk airport and pay the fine there.

They may be required to report an expired visa at cnx. Not a chance that's worth taking since you would be sent to idc in bkk and would not be pleasant.

Never ever someone checked/compared more than my name page in the passport.

And thats all by domestic airline/airport staff who have no interest in your visa/status.

If you have a Thai driving license you could use this for identification at check-in/boarding.

Which I do for some time.

I would consider a lenghty overland trip much more "risky" than a domestic flight to Suvarnabhumi.

They don't check for a valid permit to stay when traveling on domestic flights.

I was thinking it might even come up on the computer when they swipe the passport through the reader machine

Maybe it's not that hi-tech yet but it would be easy to implement because the computer could be programmed with passport number and X date of expiry etc

I have never had my passport swiped at an airport here.

Only immigration has access to your records the airlines certainly do not.

do self check in. avoid counter.

That happens at the border/immigration police but not at domestic check-in/gates.

They will open the phote/name page and compare with the booking.

And as writen a Thai DL would suffice.

Assuming you provided your passport number when opening a bank account, they could theoretically check every time you used an ATM machine. Obviously, this is a bit of a silly example, but the point I would make is this. Companies do not spend money to build functionality into their computer systems unless it is either legally mandated or has some economic benefit for the company. Neither applies.

Sounds OK so far, also could I check into am airport hotel also with expired visa?

I know they are reporting to immigration every guest, the only worry is they might report immediately and I'll risk being arrested a day before my flight etc

Autsch!

That might go wrong.

All hotels have to check the passport, look for the permission to stay and report your stay to immigration police.

Sure they may be some huts that do not report.

Best case: they simply refuse to check you in.

DON'T!

Could you check in for a domestic flight with a WP?

What do customs check your passport for at airportsome apart from whether you have a valid visa to be in the country?

Do you mean Immigration Officers?

"Customs" are not usually required to routinely check passports.

IO's check for the validity of a passport and determine if an individual qualifies for entry and for how long.

Yes no problem. You can even use a Thai driver licence for id. Have a good trip.

Slightly off topic but something that might benefit others.

I have found Thais are quick to ask for a passport when they really mean ID. I try to avoid carrying and using my PP as often as possible and first offer my Thai DL (which has my passport number on it) which has never been refused when registering a sim card or checking in to a hotel.

You wouldn't happen to be on 9 years overstay by any chance would you?

as far as I know if you are on your way to a border or immigration to sort out an overstay or visa problem then according to the law you are legal and cant be detained. years ago they did stop people in buses etc but they were doing this illegaly and it was stopped. of course you might have a difficult time convincing a policeman of this so best avoided all the same

A Visa check for a domestic flight, does your mum know you're not in your room! facepalm.gif

Done it loads of times with a UK driving license, checked in at the counter, no issues.

If that was true every foreigner on an extension would be in idc, because there Visas expired a long time ago.

I think that qualifies for the troll pedant comment of the month, and I think you're aware of it.

Never in all my time has my passport been checked for whatever reason other than when I went to immigration. But if I had an overstay i would go to the nearest immigration office and pay my overstay.

It only takes 1 event that you can't foresee where a policeman or other government official to decide that he want to see you passport, and you're in big doodoo.

The time it may take to queue at the immigration isn't really worth the risk to me.

They'll accept a photocopy even on domestic.... your going to Bangkok to replace your lost passport of course!!

pretty sure you would have a good chance of ending up in a cell if you did that. you need to go to the nearest airport or border crossing, not an immigration office.

No you can pay overstay at immigration, and I think you even get a few days extra to leave.

At least when I was there for my 90 day report the other day, next was a desk which had the sign overstay, and it was quite busy with foreigners paying their overstay.

And none of them was in an orange jump suit or in handcuffs.

Immigration offices routinely deal with minor overstays of a few days.

They will not deal with major infringements of law amounting to months of overstay.

Those with a major overstay would be well advised to stay away from immigration offices and the Police unless they really want to experience life in the IDC.

how about the average guesthouse who ask for your passport? do they report your stay to immigration police or is it just the big hotels or is the entire thing pot-luck ?

All hotels and guesthouses have to report details of all guests to Immigration, every 24 hours either by fax or online. It's unlikely however that a person on overstay would be detected from these reports, Immigration is looking for more serious offending types in their sampling.

I did not see any mention from the OP that he had a major overstay, and from his post in another thread he clearly isn't.

I am only 6 days overstayed on a 4 week visa exemptionI am only 6 days overstayed on a 4 week visa exemption

And actually he was given the advice already to go to the immigration office and pay his overstay without issues.

If you are not on overstay yet or only a few days of overstay you could apply for the 30 day extension of your visa exempt entry after you pay the overstay.
