NLA women members urge women's rights in constitution

BANGKOK, 6 November 2015 (NNT) – Women members of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) have submitted a letter petitioning the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) to enhance women’s rights and their roles in politics.

Representing women members of the NLA, Saowanee Suwannacheep handed in the letter to CDC Chairman Meechai Ruchupan, calling on the charter drafters to give women the opportunity to take more political positions.

Mrs. Saowanee said that women occupy few roles of significance in the political sphere, as many people still believe that women's duties should be confined to home and children. The NLA member argued that women nowadays have the knowledge and ability to administrate the country, provided that they are given the right support.

According to Mrs. Saowanee, women members of the legislature suggested that the CDC stipulates the same qualifications and requirements for female candidates as those for men. She said the quota system, which regulates the number of female representatives in the parliament, should be scrapped so that women can compete with men on equal footing and nepotism can be eliminated.

After watching a man kick and beat his wife women should stand up for there rights. In life, in business and equal pay! Plus no discrimination about jobs. I see most women work harder than there drunk husbands!

In a constitution everyone should be equal there shouldn't have to be separate provisions for either sexes , you'd think that anything in there is for everyone, it is not a democracy if it isn't., then again there is Thai Democracy.............coffee1.gif

A constitution specifying separate rights for men and for woman would seem a strange constitution. Equal rights for all citizens is something that belongs in a constitution and in fact was in the last two or three Thai constitutions I saw.

Even the current interim constitution, specifically Section 4, guarantees equal rights.

Has there been anything written in previous constitutions preventing women rising to the top in Thailand? Nope. Funnily, the last democratically elected PM was a WOMAN last time I checked.
