Security measures heighten for Loi Krathong

BANGKOK, 9 November 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Interior has commanded all governors to tighten security measures to prevent accidents during the Loi Krathong festival, an official says.

The Permanent-Secretary of Interior Ministry Grisada Boonrach has revealed that the ministry has urged all provincial governors on the strict imposition of the Firearms, Ammunition, Explosive Articles and Fireworks and Imitation of Firearms Act (B.E. 2490), during the Loi Krathong Festival for public safety.

Officials in all provinces, including Bangkok Metropolitan, will have to inquire the location of storage, manufacturing, or selling of fireworks that could be potentially harmful to the public, and will strictly execute relevant legal measures regarding this issue.

All agencies that are tasked with hosting Loi Krathong festivities are urged to exercise maximum precautionary measures and execute immediate assistance to the general public in the case of emergency. Related officials will be on standby at risk areas, surveying for fires and other accidents.

All locations that will organize Loi Krathong activities are prohibited from the sale of alcoholic beverages according to the law, and the general public are asked not to release floating lanterns, balloons, or the use of laser beam devices and drones near airports, as these activities may affect aviation.

The public can call the 1784 24-hour emergency hotline should any accidents occur, the Interior Ministry Permanent-Secretary says.

Strict control of fireworks eh?

A twelve years old boy in my village , blew his hand off with a firework on Friday, another lost two fingers.

They are still selling them, and the children are still playing with them.

Maybe they'll have to bite the bullet and become like any nanny state - they (including Aus) decided it's not fair to kids to be maimed like that. Or would that be going against Thainess too much?

Not selling fireworks to kids isn't exactly the sign of a nanny state.

Rather than banning the sale of fireworks, it would be better if the BIB got off their lazy asses and started arresting some of the stupid morons that every year lob them at people and into crowds. Chiang Mai is a perfect example every year. There is always a bunch of retards near and on the bridges across the Ping in the city that seem to think it is "FUN" to chuck fireworks into the middle of crowds.
