riclag
I want to send a prescription med Dexilant(for acid reflux) to Thailand from the USA. I understand customs gets involved. My question is my son is up in Sakon Nakhon.Do they have a customs office there. I hope he doesn't have to go to BKK ,Udon or Lao! Anybody know? Sheryl
If you send it by regular mail (not a courier) and in small quantities it may well get through without problem. But if there is a problem and he has to go to customs, it will indeed be a far off location, probably Bangkok. If you send by courier it will likely ntoi get through. This drug can be bought over the counter without prescription in Thailand so not sure why the need to send it here. It is a bit expensive, but there are inexpensive locally made brands of omeprazole which is in the same drug family and has similiar action. That, he can but anywhere at very low cost. The Omeprazole didn't work as well as this Dexilant did when he was in the states. Why is the USPS in the states less conspicuous as opposed to a courier? Also where does one begin to look for Dexilant (Acid Reflux) as it is a newer more potent drug as opposed to Omeprazole? oncearugge
This medication is available in Thailand as "Dexilant" It is likely only available from hospital pharmacies owing to its Thai classification ie. "S = Special Controlled Drug (ยาควบคุมพิเศษ) A first grade pharmacist shall be on duty at the premises selling modern drugs. Sale to public is on prescription only. Daily purchase and sale record required." What you are suggesting is technically illegal. However, small quantities of the medication (small = 30 days supply) sent through normal the normal postal system may arrive. As all overseas mail arrives in Bangkok if any package is detained by Customs it is likely to be kept in Bangkok until cleared.
Sheryl
Has your son been evaluated by a GI specialist and tested for h. pylori infection? If not that is what I would advice doing first, same specialist can also provide him with dexilant. Also is he aware of the various lifestyle measures that help relieve reflux? (Don't eat for at least 2 hours before kying down, and elevate the head of the bed. this last works wonders). Lastly has he tried nexium? Newer than omeprazole but not as new as dexilant and very easily found in Thai pharmacies.
wpcoe
Why is the USPS in the states less conspicuous as opposed to a courier? Supposedly the couriers (FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc) are obligated by contract (law?) to divert all shipments from overseas to Thai Customs for inspection/processing. Postal packages usually bypass that detour and come directly to your mailbox. USPS probably not 100% guaranteed to bypass Thai Customs, but many online reports indicate there's a high probability it will escape Customs scrutiny. The Dr. in the states didn't hesitate to do this procedure he said he found miled inflamation and acid reflux they did a biopsy ,no cancer was found. This is not the kind where it comes up in the middle of sleeping also no hearburn.. .he has been suffering with this for a few years but he said it got to the point were his coughing and clearing his throat was annoying people not to mention himself. The Dr. went right to the Omeprazole 40 mg that didn't work for him and then to the Dexi which he says, it helps more then Omp.He has adjusted most of his eating habits ,no citrus and as little as he can with spicey foods .he is well aware of the foods he can and can not consume. Sheryl
Would suggest he try nexium or esomeprazole Sandoz (same drug, different brands) first as it is comparatively easy to find in Thailand. Or if you do mail the dexilant, be sure to keep the quantity small.

He will need to consult a doctor and be given a prescription before the hospital pharmacy will dispense medication. Perhaps things are different in the States? Can anyone walk into a US hospital pharmacy and purchase what they want ?

I'm curious is there another name for a Gastroenterologist because I don't see it in a translator online? called
Sheryl
"GI" will be understood. Before possibly wasting money suggest asking the hosp pharmacy if they stock the drug as in a small upcountry hospital they.might not
