Beach rd. works

How much money and work has gone into beach road in the last 3 years?

Loads and Loads....

All for what?

To eliminate the shade and seating and make for a slightly better traffic flow is all this

work and money has accomplished...

The new drains are a desperate attempt to fix what they screwed up...

If they had not spent 1 Baht on beach road in the last 3 years beach road would be a much much more pleasant place than now....

the drainage pipes arent to solve a screw up, the only screw up they made was not putting them in earlier. the footpath is of course a screw up but thats another issue and not the cause of the flooding and the beach washing away

Cutting down the old-growth trees has been a total disaster for the beach, leading to major erosion. I have never seen the beach as

"thin" as it is now. It is gone in many places and what is left seems to be rapidly eroding away. What a disaster for Pattaya residents and tourists. And they are doing the same idiotic thing on Jomtien Beach right now. It boggles the mind that they still do not seem to understand the value of the salt-tolerant old-growth trees that have lined the beaches in Pattaya and Jomtien for decades (perhaps centuries).

removing the trees was certainly a mistake but the flood control didnt work just fine before the alteration, it certainly shifted it to new areas and made it more noticeable but it didnt change the amount of water that washed out over the beach. what has changed is the amount of land inland that has been concreted over the last few years which has created greater runoff, but the floods have always gone over the beach, mostly at the end of the sois

When looking at this nice solid walkway compared to the collapsing cracker jack mess they replaced it with. It is difficult to imagine that anyone could be so incompetent, even Thais.

If this "work" had taken place in any other country someone would have been accused of doing it intentionally.

And regarding the Beach works they said it would be completed in December - but they did not say what year. And unless they have contracted foreign engineers this project is doomed.

The old trees, gardens & footpath were destroyed by pure greed.

It was a thoughtful design that just needed widening and better maintenance.

Unfortunately, City Staff insisted in leasing the area to vendors during "festivals."

The City put vendors right on top of the gardens and destroyed them. The undulating and meandering footpaths had tents set up all over, crooked, then propped up with bricks or nearby rubble.

It wasn't working out so the City came up with a clever "improvement" plan. Have the taxpayers pay to bulldoze the place, level it and cover it in concrete...then we can set up out tents and stuff our greedy little pockets.

Well its just about high season and that segment between just South of Royal Garden and Walking st , both the walkway and on the beach (whats left of it) is one sorry mess.

All the drain pipe related construction has left just a narrow improvised walkway next to Beach rd from South end promenade to Walking st. The boardwalk is blocked off now.

The beach is almost gone in that area leaving large chunks of concrete and decaying sandbags.(photos appreciated )

And even as far North as the Soi Post Office (soi 13 ) area the sand is washed out leaving broken concrete steps and assorted hard junk piles.

I have never in 12 years here seen such a mess of this beach.

Its true that the more work they do here just makes it worse. And it remains to be seen how this massive drain project will affect sand distribution along the beach.

Ie. that project in the Soi 6 area might be responsible for the lack of beach sand at South end of beach.

And besides this there the is major collapsed area in front of Holiday Inn ( North end ) and the collapsed area at Soi 8

You have to see this from a long-term perspective. The beach erosion is, in large part, due to the removal of the old-growth halophytic (salt tolerant) trees that once provided shade and prevented soil erosion. Of course, there are other factors, such as destroying natural watershed areas, spreading concrete all over the place, a poorly designed water-runoff system, and climate change (and associated thermal expansion of the oceans and increase in the intensity of storms), but removing nature's best beach erosion prevention creations was a major mistake. It was, in fact, stupid beyond imagination. And they are currently replicating the FUBAR design on Jomtien Beach!

I agree about the trees in the total perspective. These folks just do not have a clue about cause and effect whatsoever !

And you can see this everywhere not just the beach and walkway disaster.

That is if you can call that motorbike road for low life locals a walkway.

I expect given the shambles that the beach and walkway are this high season that there finally are going to be some

( enough is enough )Europeans looking elsewhere in the future.

Of course they (TAT) will have the increasing arrivals numbers from the oblivious mass touring Chinese to offset this.

These seem to be preparation for the costly beach restoration program. There is a sign with details attached at the site just before Walking Str. Enormous sum of money and guaranteed to be another <deleted>...-up.....:-) They'd better bring in some foreign experts from Aussie-land or such to make this a success. MS>
