second year on retirement visa

Featured Replies

my retirement visa was issued by los angeles in january 2015, and i entered thailand in march 2015. is it possible to extend my permission to remain in thailand for most of another year by making a border run to mae sai/tachilek prior to the january 2016 expiration of the original visa? i understand that is possible if i exit and reenter the country while the visa is still valid, but i'm just not sure whether a mae sai border run is sufficient for that purpose. thanks for your advice.

Sounds like you have a "Non O-A" (multiple) visa?

If so, then yes.

Every re-entry before the Jan 2016 expiry date (ENTER BEFORE) will give you another permission to stay for one year.

Should look similar to this:

Yes but there have been cases reported here of land crossings not understanding a valid O-A and not stamping in for a year. But they SHOULD do.

Enter the visa number on the arrival card!

Point to the visa when entering!

Immediately check stamp after entering!

In case of error, ask for a superior!

I had no problem in Nong Khai, 2011.

And believe me I checked the stamp biggrin.png

Of course.

It's a good time to be proactively paranoid just as you did.

I was recently advised by Nakhon Sri immigration that yes if you exit and re-enter before your visa expires you are entitled to a

further 12 months stay, provided you have a multiple entry visa originally.

However,as suggested by other posters road borders can be a real lottery sometimes.

Maybe better to get a cheap flight somewhere as airports should be no problem at all.

Just a suggestion.

I must be in Thailand too long.

Second "paranoid" comment on my posts today biggrin.png

It was meant as a complement. It's not real paranoia when there are good reasons for it. To just assume the land border people are always going to do their jobs properly in a situation they don't see everyday is unrealistically optimistic.

I would advise a person doing a border crossing for the new one year entry to check the stamp before leaving the arrival immigration area. If wrong turn around and get the error fixed.

No need to fly out and back.
