TheCruncher
I have a BTV cable internet connection, which is a CAT reseller. Tonight there was a storm and lightning and something got fried. I have a cable modem and router provided by BTV. After the lightning I lost my internet connection. On the cable modem the cable connection light is on, and fast flashing as usual. My thoughts are that the WAN port of the router is fried since that doesn't light up anymore. So I connect a new router.Connect the WAN port from the router to a LAN port cable modem, and the indicator lamp lights up as connected, and a LAN port from my router to my Ethernet switch. I then select PPoE and enter username and password in the router. I'm 100% sure these are correct, since the modem doesn't have an option to enter username or password. Next the router status says that my internet connection is connected, but the gateway IP addresses don't look familiar, and I also don't have internet. Normally I get gateway IP starting with 110.*** or 117.***, but now I get gateway IP starting with 10.*** When I enter the first gateway IP address in my browser ( 10.2.7.71) I'm directed to the log in screen from my intellinet router, though the IP address from my router is 192.168.2.1, and I can perfectly log in to my router. When I enter the second gateway IP address ( 10.2.7.1 ) I get an error website from CAT. Calling to the number on the website doesn't help as they say I have to contact BTV, which is closed at night. Any help appreciated. Edit to add: My Local area connection shows traffic though. Edited November 9, 2015 by TheCruncher

TheCruncher
Still no internet, and BTV will only come in the afternoon, but clearly there is traffic on my WAN so what can be the reason that CAT doesn't allow me to log in?
RichCor
Are you saying that BTV supplied two components, a Cable DOCSIS Modem, and a standard Router? If so, then the Cable Modem is working in Bridge Mode. 10.x.x.x range are sometimes used prior to authentication, allowing the equipment to communicate with the provisioning servers and negotiate authentication. When successfully completed, the provisioning server will refresh the DHCP Lease with a IP Address that can connect with the Internet. Some providers also lock the authentication requirement to the hardware MAC address.
