Ministry of Labor launches crackdown on human trafficking

BANGKOK, 12 November 2015 (NNT) – The Ministry of Labor has launched a crackdown on suspected human traffickers, especially those preying on illegal laborers.

Ministry of Labor undersecretary Puntarik Samiti said the agency will immediately combat suspected human traffickers who might exploit any workers.

Thailand has already taken several measures to cope with the human trafficking problems, though other steps are yet to be taken. One urgent measure calls for ministry officials to screen the employment of laborers at all workplaces.

He said an operation center for the prevention and handling of human trafficking was set up in Bangkok last month while others will be set up in every province nationwide.

Moreover, the ministry has launched a live TV program entitled: "workers' station" on the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand (NBT)'s Channel 11 every Tuesday from 1.05 p.m. until 1.55 p.m. since November 10, 2015.

One wonders is something like this has any basis in reality, or if it is just more talk from the little guy. There is so much talk coming from his direction, and so little action, it is quite astounding there is any credibility remaining. It would be amazing if they actually pursued something like this. With all the talk of the enforcement of fishing practices, it is surprising how little you hear about boat captains being arrested for harboring slaves on their boats, when one knows there are probably tens, if not hundreds of thousands of slaves working in this country.

I wonder why so many "crackdowns" are being mentioned. I think I've found the reason, the government has only got a pocketbook version of an English/Thai dictionary and so therefore their choice of words is very limited. They need to buy a thesaurus.

"though other steps are yet to be taken."

Yes, like detection and interdiction. The government can't always rely on bombed shrines or the Malaysian military to uncover traffickers.
