BANGKOK: Five Thung Song district police officers were temporarily moved to inactive posts at the operations centre of provincial police region 8 for their alleged failure to crack down on illegal gambling dens in their areas of jurisdiction.

On Tuesday, a team of Bangkok-based Crime Suppression Division police raided a godown in Tambon Chamai, Muang district of Nakhon Si Thammarat which was turned into an illegal casino.

More than 60 gamblers were rounded up in the raid together several gambling equipments.

It was reported that the casino had been in operational for a long time and was wellknown to most people in the district but no action was taken by the district police to close it.

The five police officers include Pol Col Somchai Suetortrakul, the superintendent of Thung Song police; Pol Lt-Col Rangsan Sukkua, the deputy superintendent; Pol Lt-Col Pisanukorn Jardmuang, the deputy superintendent; Pol Lt-Col Palakorn Kitvichit, inspector for suppression; and Pol Lt-Col Patiwat Khunrung, inspector of investigation.

Pol Col Pudit Norasingh, deputy commander of Nakhon Si Thammarat police, was appointed to head Thung Song police replacing Pol Col Somchai.

Out of town law enforcement.

Needed countrywide.

twiddle thumbs while inactive, how about a game of cards to pass the time?

Funny stuff. The Thai police are out shaking down every small business in their district

for their monthly tea money. Does anybody in their right mind think the police do not

know if a casino making millions of baht is located in their district ????

The police are in it up to their necks. Anyone who follows the news here

will know that....Police complicity regarding casinos is a tradition here. When caught,

generally the high ups never face anything as they make big payoffs to avoid

prosecution, and a few underlings are thrown under the bus. No wonder the Thai

police are the laughing stock of the world. :-)

The headline says ' abetting illegal gambling ' which should mean criminal charges are relevant against the officers rather than a sideways move until the dust settles. Notice I said ' should mean ' but we know that's not going to happen.

At the very least serious discipline charges should be presented with dismissal and loss of benefits upon any conviction.

However it's the usual form that the transfers out are announced and that's the last we hear.

It seems it never matters how much adverse publicity they get nothing ever changes and no one seems too bothered about it.

So many issues here seem to be accepted as ' that's just how things are ' and nothing much is ever done to initiate changes.

Can someone tell me why these fine fellows are not in court facing charges or at the very least fired from their jobs.

Because they are cops.

How can anyone believe or take the prime minister serious when he says he will clamp down on corruption and bring happiness to the people. Obviously you can't with details like this. Same old practices for the corrupt police. Move them on. They will probably get a pay rise.bah.gif

Keeping up the reputation of the rtp

There is a huge EPL gambling system running in the open in my hood for more than 10 years. Take a wild guess who runs it...

I think what Thailand really needs is their own Eliot Ness or 5 along with a few "untouchable" groups to attempt to clear up the mess of corruption that is Thailand.

That's quite a damming indictment on the part of these five senior officers, yet the official response so far, has been to move them to inactive posts (temporarily).

That's got to give the public confidence in their police force!

Welcome, welcome men! Your govt. inactive post welcomes you as you continue your career as a govt. employee. Sit back and relax and wait for your new assignment. Got a little too much paunch from sitting those long hours at your old desk ? Take your free time and start some elementary jogging and stay sharp in learning how your past screw ups were exposed!

Exactly.

It points toward the type of reform needed for the Thai Police. The US has police forces at national, State, County, and Local levels. Any one of them is empowered, within their geography, to arrest any other police for crimes. Thailand's police forces are basically a monolith will little oversight.

I believe they can soon close all the police stations as all will be at UPI, - Unassigned Post Island !
