BANGKOK: -- THE GOVERNMENT will step up security precautions during the upcoming festive season, which includes next Wednesday's Loy Krathong and New Year celebrations - in response to heightened concerns following the horrific terror attacks in Paris last Friday.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said Thailand needs to tighten and better manage its security.

Gen Thawip Netniyom, secretary-general of National Security Council, said all security and related agencies have been ordered to beef up measures to prevent untoward incidents in major public places in Bangkok.

Thai security officials will also work with counterparts in the region to closely monitor movements of possible terrorist groups across borders, he said, adding that separatists in the far south were not related to the Islamic State (IS), which said it carried out the attacks in Paris.

Thawip said security measures would be increased in public places, including department stores and shopping centres, for big gatherings of people. It would also be tightened for events to mark His Majesty the King's birthday on December 5, he said.

The NSC chief said officials were on alert for possible terrorist movements and would not be complacent.

Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said the ministry would work closely with the Royal Thai Police and Tourist Police Division in stepping up measures during the festive season, with tourist police to be assigned to take extra care of groups visiting the country, she said.

Kobkarn said the premier had expressed concern following the Paris attacks, which resulted in 129 deaths and left hundreds more injured.

Despite the Paris drama, Prayut confirmed yesterday that he would attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference being held in Paris from November 30 to December 11.

"If other leaders go, I'll go to show our support for the French people," he said.

Meanwhile, PM's adviser Veerasak Futrakul yesterday conveyed the Thai premier's condolences to French Ambassador to Thailand Gilles Garachon over the deadly attacks in Paris.

In a separate visit, former premier Yingluck Shinawatra also went to the French Embassy on Charoen Krung Road and signed a book of condolences. "I wish to send my condolences to the French people," she wrote. Yingluck also gave a bouquet of white flowers to Garachon.

Hardly leading from the front is it ? I could see the point if he's said the only thing that would keep him away would be the event being cancelled.
