BANGKOK: -- Thailand has urged Japan to invest more in the Kingdom under the Super-Cluster policy, and also increase market access for farm crops such as mangos and processed pork.

Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn held a meeting with her Japanese counterpart in the Philippines on the sidelines of the 27th APEC Summit in Manila.

She said after meeting with Motoo Hayashi, Japan's economic, trade and Industries minister, that Thailand and Japan agreed to tighten cooperation in trade and investment as way to promote trade and investment growth between the two sides.

Thailand asked Japanese investors to expand and start new investments in Thailand under the Super-Cluster policy or in the special economic zones following the Thai government's measure to support supply-chain industries' shift from upstream to downstream as well as promote small and medium-sized enterprises investment, and research and development institutes in the same area.

Apiradi said Thailand needs more investment from foreign investors. To that end, Japanese investors are among the main targets as they have high-technology sophistication, which can be transferred to Thais.

Targeted industrial clusters in several sectors, such as automobile and parts, electronic appliances, petro-chemical, digital, processed-agricultural products, and textile and garments.

Moreover, Thailand also asked Japan to increase its import quota for mangos and processed pork, as well as discuss ways to promote bilateral trade growth under the Japan-Thailand Economic Partnership Agreement (Jtepa).

Somkid mission due

Thailand also informed Japan that on November 25-28, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak would lead an economic team to Tokyo to strengthen economic cooperation with Japan, while encouraging Japan to expand businesses in Thailand.

Meanwhile, Apiradi said that Thailand and Chile have agreed to promote closer trade and investment cooperation after the free-trade agreement between Thailand and Chile has just been enforced on November 5.

After a separate bilateral meeting with Andres Rebolledo, the Chilean vice minister for trade on the sidelines of the summit, both countries will exchange business missions and trade seminars to promote trade growth during the coming year, she added.

Chile will also use Thailand as gateway for expanding its trade and investment growth in Asean, while Thailand has recognised Chile as a springboard to other Latin America markets.

Don't need Super Clusters. Just join the TransPacific Partnership.
