Urine Sampling Cermonies In Bangkok Bars

Taking the p***

A reader has alerted us to a scam being carried out by the boys in tight brown who officiate at urine sampling ceremonies in Bangkok bars.

It seems that some have been jotting down the name and address of people caught up in raids on bars and discos, and then grace them with a visit the next day, saying that a follow-up urine test has found traces of illegal drugs.

The visiting officers suggest they can make this serious problem go away for a price.

The reader who alerted us suggests the following course of action:

“If the police who test you ask for your name and address, as soon as they let you go, rush to a local hospital and get a full urine test, indicating the exact day and time at which it is done.

“The following day, if you receive some scammers in uniform, you can show them the results attested by a respected hospital.”

The taking of a sample without grounds and authority would be considered an invasion of privacy in most developed countries and not be condoned.

I find it amazing that one is obliged to give a sample at all, or phrased another way that the local cops are empowered to randomly ask for a sample.

Is this really a law here - and what are the safeguards, if any, for the bar goers? o/wise sure sounds like an opportunity for exploitation...

They were out in force in soi cowboy on wednesday night again, about 8 police trucks, table set up right in the middle of the street, and two girls from every bar had to pee.

An over kill, and degrading situation. And they wonder why arrivals were down 13% in March.

Then of course, drink the apple juice disguised as urine...or both.. GIVE the Tighty Browns a thrill... :o

Don't blame the urine tests on the cops. It is certainly not how they want to be spending their Friday and Saturday nights. No...put the blame where it should be: on the shoulders of the politicians who give the cops their marching orders.

I agree here. And I also share some of the other member's complete disbelief that this is an accepted law. This guilty until you prove to us you are innocent notion. Thailand has a long way to go. They want to be this thriving fashion capital, design capital, economic powerhouse AND holiday destination for millions of wealthy tourists. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN UNTIL THEY GRANT PERSONAL FREEDOM. NEVER.

They are delusional if they believe they can continue on this course and achieve these lofty goals.
