BANGKOK: -- WITH MUSIC and performances on stage, the "One Young World Summit 2015'' kicked off yesterday in Bangkok with almost 200 countries placing their flags on the stage during the opening ceremony.

The ceremony at Sanam Luang also proudly conveyed the diverse cultures of Thailand's four regions.

Around 1,300 delegates, arriving in Bangkok earlier yesterday to attend this key global event, were warmly welcomed on a flotilla of boats, which took them to the venues on the Chao Phraya River.

After the flotilla procession, delegates were taken to the formal open ceremony at Sanam Luang, in the historic centre of Bangkok.

Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said yesterday the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) was ready and willing to host the first "One Young World Summit 2015'' with 1,300 young leaders from 196 countries.

In the coming days, the young people will put their heads together over world issues until Saturday - under the watchful eyes of world leaders attending the summit as youth councillors.

They include former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, Bob Geldof, Muhammad Yunus and Paul Polman.

Sukhumbhand said this year was the best time to hold the summit as the Asean economic community was about to be established. The summit provides a stage for the world's young leaders to discuss issues that urgently need solutions.

"The inspiration derived from this summit will help bring about solutions to problems faced by the world," Sukhumbhand said.

Kate Robertson, founder of One Young World, said she chose to hold the summit in Bangkok because it was a vibrant capital with great diversity of races, religions and cultures - but where people lived in harmony and peace.

"Thailand is the most prominent city in terms of holding social activities that would suit One Young World's philosophy," she said

The summit will touch on six issues relating to: education, environment, world business, human rights, leadership and administration, peace and security.

Oh well, never mind....however it's done; Bangkok is probably as good a place as any for mulling.

BANGKOK: -- The ‘One Young World Summit 2015’ officially kicked off yesterday at the Sanam Luang in front of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha with over 1,300 outstanding youths from 196 countries taking part.

The world event will last up to November 21.

The official opening ceremony began at 6.30 pm with music and performances by Thai youths showing diverse cultures of Thailand’s four regions.

The performances had impressed all who attended.

Mr Kofi Anan, the former secretary-general of the United Nations, honored the proceedings by giving an opening speech which signaled the official launch of the event at 7.00 pm.

Around 1,300 young delegates arriving in Bangkok earlier yesterday to attend the key global event.

They were warmly welcomed on a flotilla of ferries, which took them to the venues on the Chao Phraya river.

As they traversed the fabled Chao Phraya river, they were granted a spectacular view of the magnificent historical structures along its banks before finally arriving at the Maharat pier where they disembarked.

From there they were led on-foot to participate in the official ceremony held at the Sanam Luang field.

Although the day was comparatively hot, these aspiring youth leaders were happy and were seen smiling and enjoying their time there.

For many, this was their first time in Thailand and many stated that they were not the least concerned over the recent bombing incidents. All were unanimous in voicing their confidence in the security arrangements and were reassured by the friendly, smiling nature of the Thai people.

Earlier Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra said the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) was ready and willing to host the first “One Young World Summit 2015” with 1,300 young leaders from 196 countries.

""The inspiration derived from this summit will help bring about solutions to problems faced by the world," Sukhumbhand said."

This rather contradicts the headline. The essential Thai leadership skill of "Mulling" is taught specifically to avoid the responsibility of finding solutions.

Sounds as if Ms. Robertson has been drinking Thai KoolAid. She as yet to scratch the surface.

As for young Thais helping the rest of the world, curious to hear what great things they have done in Thailand and in neighboring countries.

I wonder if Thai authorities have given the kids a list of banned subjects like democracy and human rights? Hope none of them will have to have their attitudes adjusted! Edited by MZurf

Yes I agree unfortunately his stand will eventually paint a target on his back. If the system can assassinate a sitting US president this guy is but a small pebble on the road. Yes technology could be used to change the world to eradicate poverty, unemployment and self greed but the self greed part will overcome the first two poverty and unemployment. We the elders who are close to dropping off of the planet are now handing the baton to these energetic, smiling youngsters brimming with confidence the same confidence I had many moons ago but which became lost over the decades to the monumental greed that has arisen among the moneyed few on the planet. It will be a tough struggle and the outcome will not be peaceful I am afraid. Politicians and big business are backing workers into a corner. A cornered beast becomes a dangerous animal. Just read about what is happening in South Korea today. Their dynasty leader is trying to rewrite history favorable to her deceased father. She is trying to oppress workers to compete with the low wages in China and parts of Asia. My g/f's friend works on a chicken farm in Korea making 60,000 bahts a month plus room and board. Try and beat that in the rest of Asia. The problem in South Korea lies not in the North but internally.

The poor like brewery workers, hauliers, and bar staff who would find themselves out of a job?

How many people die from driving too fast? Obesity? Dangerous sports?

Besides, if one wished to be cynical, one might argue early deaths mean fewer pension payouts...

I hope for the security of the delegates that the Thai government inform them of the junta's restrictions on freedom of expression in any form

The rules are numerous and often vague being mostly determined on the spot by the whims of law enforcement and military authorities.

Delegates should understand that their rights and liberties are not guaranteed by any constitution but are defined and permitted solely by the junta. Furthermore, they should be briefed on behavior appropropiate to the Thai buddhist culture and warned of lawless traffic practices.

Prayut should show a heavy hand. Otherwise, unintended incidents may occur that willl damage the reputation of Thailand and the junta. wai2.gif
