Boat Races Can Proceed During Festival, PM says

After the government cancelled the annual Water Festival in Phnom Penh at the end of last month, citing low water levels and drought in the country, Prime Minister Hun Sen said yesterday that the boat races that are a hallmark of the festival can proceed but organizers will need to ensure the safety of racers.

Writing on his Facebook page yesterday, Mr. Hun Sen said river levels will make the boat races very unsafe but authorities will not prohibit them from proceeding if capable people and volunteers want to proceed with the event.

“We hope that people will understand about safety. Safety is the priority,” he wrote.
