US 'grave disappointment' with Thailand for deportations

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States has joined international criticism of its ally Thailand for deporting to China two refugees identified by human rights groups as pro-democracy activists.

State Department spokesman John Kirby expressed "grave disappointment" Wednesday with the Thai decision. He said the U.N.-registered refugees could face harsh treatment, arbitrary detention and the lack of due process in China.

He urged Thailand to abide by its international obligations and commitments and its longstanding practice of providing safe haven to vulnerable persons.

The U.S. branch of Amnesty International has identified the refugees as Jiang Yefei and Dong Guangping, and said they were most likely sent to China on Friday.

Thailand faced widespread criticism in July for forcibly repatriating 109 minority Uighurs who had fled China, where they say they face repression.

They were illegally staying in Thailand, so off course they should be deported. The western world should do the same, and many terrorism incidents would have been avoided.

These were UN registered pro democracy activists. They weren't fleeing a war, they weren't economic refugees, they hadn't committed any crime, they were fleeing Government oppression for their views. The Junta should be ashamed of their actions, but there again many Thais have fled Thailand because of political oppression by the Junta so we shouldn't be surprised at them doing this.

There is no oppression of views......they most probably tried to cause unrest and change government system by illegal means...so they are criminals in China.

If you try to cause unrest and try to change the government system you also get in troubles in Germany, Austria, France.....

"...they most probably tried to cause unrest and change government system by illegal means.."

And why do you make that assumption? Is it based on China's stellar human rights record? And by saying they probably tried to cause unrest and change government system do you mean that they wanted democracy and openly expressed that desire? Well, then they really should be behind bars!!!

'They most probably'

Glad you are not in control of a govt to base the deporting of UN recognised refugees on a 'most probably' gut feeling.

Thailand faced widespread criticism in July for forcibly repatriating 109 minority Uighurs who had fled China, where they say they face repression.

And it turned out Thailand was correct about this, as the Uighurs were being smuggled by ISIS through Thailand to Turkey, so that they could fight in Syria. Never trust an NGO as they always have hidden agendas.

Yes, unlike governments!

What terrorism incidents could have been avoided by deporting pro-democracy activists from the West?

The 2 chinese were granted asylum and were about to be repatriated to another country that accepted them as refugees. One may ask what made Thailand act so fast only days before they were to leave anyway.

One of the men was wanted because he committed the dastardly crime of comemmorating the students that died in the 1989 Tianmanen Square massacre.

Thailand are acting utterly attrocious in this matter.

The train and submarine project facilitation payments will not happen unless the Thai government "remains on friendly terms" with their Chinese counterparts.

The sad part is that I can write the above in sincere belief it is a possibility.

However, I'm sure the National Reform Steering Committee will be having some serious discussions about reforming the human rights policies of Thailand. So there is hope.

Ok, I admit it. That was just unadulterated sarcasm.

Says who? How many of the 15 million Uighurs are joining ISIS? Or do you just tar all Uighurs with the same brush as you think it's easy to put blame on an ethnic group? You sound just like the Chinese who they are running, from by the way.

The Red Cross, Save the Children, Doctors without Borders, Global Rights, World Vision, etc etc. all have "hidden agendas", really? How does it feel to be such a coward that you are afraid of the Red Cross.

Umm, no, actually the right to protest is protected by law within all of those countries, as for "trying to change the government system", in the West we call that 'democracy', and it is not a crime. LOL

Have you ever looked at a map.? Why would they do that when they could just go through Afghanistan which would welcome them with open arms as brothers in the struggle against the west?

Rubbish, they were refugees certified by the UN. The western world would not have done the same.

Then if the UN felt that they had reason to flee they should have looked after them. It is no secret that since teh US and EU snubbed it's nose at Thailand that China and Russia have become friends.

The UN could have stepped in and given them sanctuary and relocated them to another country.

The UN s not all that well organized or well run. Thailand is totally responsible for this.

If I understand correctly, these people had been granted asylum in Canada and were awaiting travel. They should have been allowed to leave for Canada in my opinion. (Correct me if I am wrong)

It is getting clearer and clearer where Thailand allies itself, and it is not with the West.

They have lost so much face recently with human rights etc. that they seem intent on sucking up to their latest puppet masters in China.

Obviously the notion of a "refugee" us unknown to you and to Thailand for that matter. Shame on you. Shame on Thailand.

Human compassion is something people in Thailand should learn soon. The world would be a better place.

Shawn, that story comes uniquely from the Chinese media and no one else. The Uighur are not going in droves to Turkey to join IS
