BANGKOK: -- Loy Krathong festival this year will see the highest number of Thais celebrating for the past three years, reflecting the increased confidence that the national economy is on the path to recovery.

A survey carried to gauge consumer behaviour and attitudes for 2015’s ‘Loy Kratong’ festival shows the most promising figures in the past three years of the country.

The results strongly indicate that the national economy has passed through its lowest point and is now on the path to recovery.

It is expected that as much as 11.413 billion baht will be spent during the festival which is a 2.5% improvement over the previous year, according to the survey by the Center for Economic and Business Forecasting for the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

It predicts that the economy will grow between 2.8 – 3.1 % for 2015 and will help drive next year’s growth as well.

These facts correlate with the views of Pridi Daochai the managing director of Kasikorn Bank who predicts that 2016’s economy will grow by no less than 3%.

He cites increased public spending by the government as the main factor that will drive economic recovery.

However he stated that the national economic recovery was still greatly dependent upon two factors, drought outlook and the proportionally high household debt figures.

These factors could possibly stall recovery by dampening consumer spending and will strongly depend upon what measures the government will put in place to address the problem.

The survey involved pointing a loaded gun at the "consumer" and giving him/her/it a choice of two possible answers, "yes" things are great or "boom"

I love these surveys done by the "govt"

Really! So now surveys will predict the number of people who will go out to celebrate a night for lovers and then use this number to predict economic growth and Thai confidence with the current gov. And to think I could never quite understand why they call this place "amazing Thailand"

Now I understand

They didn't ask HOW they will be celebrating the festival.

Most men will consume copious amounts Lau Cau and beer and won't remember a thing come the next day. Just like any other typical weekend.

I'm going to tell (ask) the missus not to go out on the 25th.

Let them re-evaluate the effect on the economy after that prediction.

In the US, 94 million people are out of work, and the unemployment rate is 5.1%?

Only the ignorant and gullible believe any statistics issued by government agencies. On a good day, they are self-serving SOBs.
