BANGKOK, 21 November 2015 (NNT) - The Election Commission (EC) is seeking the help of the Interior Ministry to promote democracy in various provinces and stamp out the illegal practice of vote buying.

EC Secretary-General Puchong Nutrawong along with other EC members met with Interior Minister General Anupong Paochinda to discuss ways to support democracy, stamp out vote buying, and set up a public referendum. The EC has asked the Interior Ministry to assist by increasing the number of personnel responsible for promoting democracy in the villages, adding that the individual who is responsible for promoting democracy and election should come from the district’s center. The move is aimed at creating good democratic citizens in each village.

In addition, the EC is also asking district sheriffs to facilitate the effort, by setting up monthly meetings with local authorities and organize activities for villagers to inform them of related information.

Is that junta speak for promoting the junta's interests by placing one representative in each village? This bunch sound more and more Orwellian every day.

Not sure about placing a new representative in each village. Sounds more like using the same old crew, with all its warts and "nuances" and asking them to deliver a new message.

That'll work well then! Obviously well thought through as usual.

District sheriffs - are they elected or appointed, independent of BiB, anything to do with law and order? Never heard of them before.

The pattern appears that the current government expects the Meechai draft constitution will be approved soon by the NRSC and go quickly to a public referendum. It seems to be preparing for a massive PR campaign to promote the Meechai constitution and getting all the government organizations to participate. No opponent to provisions of the draft will be able to match the unelected government's resources ironcially using Thai taxpayer funds.

At the same time the current government may try to restrict/limit any coordinated opposition to any of the constitution articles with liberal applications of Article 44. In the referendum for the 2007 constitution the government refused to translate it into arab for the Malay-Thais.

Whether it succeeds in bullying the electorate to approve the draft (only needs 50+% of total votes) is still up to the electorate. Buddha help them. wai2.gif
