Phuket Opinion: Don’t put blame, put it right

PHUKET: With Phuket being a world-class holiday destination, one would have thought that the island’s infrastructure would also be world class. Sadly, this is not the case. One only has to drive around the island to see how poor the roads are kept, or unkept, as the case may be.

There’s a lot of ongoing construction going on around the island, and this is one thing to blame for some of the road conditions. One such construction is that of the Sam Kong underpass, already several months behind schedule, and one that has had scorn poured upon it recently by the Phuket Governor.

However, one thing that the Governor failed to scorn is the new drainage system being installed alongside the underpass route. This is part of the underpass project and has been ongoing since February.

Delays of these drains first came down to a lack of building sand, and the latest is that the Governor insists that work on the underpass is a priority. This resulted in Wiwat Cons. Co Ltd, responsible for both the underpass and the drains, allocating all its workers to focus on the underpass.

Yes, we understand what the Governor has ordered, but the work on those drains is now not due to be complete until June 2016. A nearby international hospital has built a complete new wing in the time the drain construction has been ongoing.

"A water meter fails to turn when no water is running through it." Then there is odd chance that it works? Better would be to see if turns when there is water running through it.... not rocket science.

Along with it's 'world class' public transport system, or lack thereof.

There is no correlation between tourist areas and infrastructure here. If there was then Patong, Karon, Kata would have the best roads, footpaths, utilities systems, buildings etc on the island. This is not the case. Phuket town has the cream of the crop of everything in terms of infrastructure on the island.

Whilst I'm in total agreement with what you say, I think in your last sentence you correctly made the point of "... has the cream of the crop of everything in terms of infrastructure on the ISLAND ( my capitals). Phuket Town is indeed better than (virtually) the rest of the island. That doesn't mean to say Phuket Towns infrastructure is good though.
