Thailand kicks off roadshow in Japan this week to boost investment

BANGKOK: -- Thailand will send a top level economic team to Japan on a roadshow to attract investors in the new innovative industries to the country.

The move was hailed by the private sector with confidence it will have positive results on the country’s economy.

The roadshow was revealed by Mr Somkid Jatusripitak, the deputy prime minister, after yesterday’s meeting with the team in charge of national economy to prepare them for the economic mission to Tokyo, Japan.

The mission is planned for November 25–28 and is aimed at attracting Japanese investors to Thailand.

Seminars and meetings with Japan’s leading industries are being planned with hopes of convincing them to invest in Thailand.

Mr Somkid said so far more than 1,000 companies have committed to attending the event and these companies must be made aware of developments underway in Thailand’s economy.

He said they must be informed of Thailand’s plans to restructure the national economy, industry, national economic stimulus packages as well as investment.

Japanese companies will also be informed of the Board of Investment’s plans for developing basic industries and its desire to attract innovative high-tech industries to the country.

Meanwhile the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) revealed that it would sign agreement with three Japanese departments during the ‘roadshow’ to promote Thai tourism.

TAT hopes to attract no less than 2 million Japanese tourists to Thailand by 2020, or 10% of all Japanese travelers who depart from the country on a yearly basis.

In the past, the highest number of Japanese tourists to Thailand was in 2013 with a total of 1.6 million visitors.

However the number fell to between 1.2 – 1.4 million this year, due mainly to global economy downturn, and the recent political troubles in Thailand.

It says the outlook for Thailand’s tourism sector however remains promising.

So far as "its desire to attract innovative high-tech industries to the country" from Japan, Thailand is hard pressed to offer a competitive and stimulating intellectual environment for any Intellectual Property industries found in Japan and the USA. Even the Chinese are flocking to the West to develop knowledge for high-tech industries.

Thailand, despite all its modern amentities and manufacturing capabilities, is still basically a resource industry. Thailand has not even made effective use of its natural resources. What any foreign investor searches for is high growth rate coupled with political stability - that ain't Thailand now.

Hope all the WAGS had a nice time......
