So I'm looking at the Canadin requirements for the METV. And on the Ontario consulate website it says we only need $1,000 available instead of every other country that seems to need around $7,000.

At the Vancouver consulate I found the application form, as that's the one I would use and there is no mention of employment proof. I mean, it asks to specify your position and the name and address or your employer but no need for a letter. Also, it simply says, "how much money do you have for your trip?" But doesn't ask for a bank statement for proof. (No need to show the past 6 months).

*Ontario asks for a bank statement showing $1,000 but Vancouver doesn't.

Is this right? Am I missing a page of requirements or is this another case of Canada being awesome and just trusting that we will behave when we are away? I'd hate to screw up my application.

I don't mind showing cash available, I don't in general mind the idea of a showing a bank statement, except the bank statement shows an account number plus other recent transactions that are nobody's business. In this day of information theft, I hate the idea of volunteering giving my bank account number to anybody

Exactly! This privacy issue. All my account activity during past 6 months? Has anybody encountered such demand anywhere, please? There are countries with notoriously high level of screening, and for good reasons, like USA.

But do you guys know of any country that requires daily banking details of past 6 months? To me this seems like a comedy bit, a sketch, and not something real. Yet it seems it is very real,, and Thai Embassies demand to see all my banking activity, basically all I do with my money in the past 6 months!

Any other country on Earth requiring this for issuing a Tourist Visa?

In the USA it seems the way to go is a separate no monthly fee / no minimum balance checking account with the money in it for the METV requirement for at least 6 months prior to applying for the METV -- just requires a little advance planning.

I don't really think the Thai METV creators meant to see all banking activity, except to see that the money is steady and really yours and not just plopped in there at the last moment to show you had travel funds, and then later the funds would just be returned to whoever gave them to you, and you really don't have sufficient funds. This is kind of the mentality when they want to see other types of visa extension money "seasoned" prior to getting the extension approved. But the whole thing is a bit silly because you could have massive debts and a gun to your head from loan sharks that they don't know about.

Here is the requirements for the embassy in Ottawa: http://www.thaiembassy.ca/uploads/ott09112015.pdf You wrote Ontario so it seems you missed the PDF that a link to is posted in an announcement about the METV.

It seems Vancouver has not updated their website with the requirements for the METV. What you are seeing is only an announcement and the requirement for a single entry visa.

Nobody ask for detailed transactions. All what they want see is the balance at end of previous months. If your bank website doesn't allow you to just show that, then mask all transaction on the copies you give to the embassy. Same for the account number.

Sorry, I meant Ottawa. Wrote that after a 10 hour graveyard shift. And good news, after some digging around I found Vancouver's requirement page as well. 20,000 baht for the METV. So $750 Canadian. I did miss that PDF though so thank you for the link. Looks like even with Ottawa's $7,500 they still aren't asking for proof of a job to go back to. :)

I don't know if it's just the fact that the west coast is so chill but they really do say 20,000 baht on the METV requirements page. So glad I'm out here.

Honestly I was a bit worried about the job requirements before I saw this. I'm an author as well so by the time we go I will most likely no longer have an employer and just be writing full time and living off my royalties. Our application form looks like it will accept that. And yeah yeah I know the term "digital nomad" brings on the TV shit storm, but as a novelist I find myself in the same boat problem wise when it comes to visas. Because really, just like them I can write books ANYWHERE. And like them, authors have no long term visa options other than the Ed visa. I don't mind though because I actually WANT to learn Thai, but it is beyond annoying that that's my ONLY option if we want to stay a year problem free (CMUni).

So yaaaay, looks like Canada got the sweet end of the METV stick.

Not sure where you saw $1000 on the Ottawa site. In the PDF file I posted a link to it says $7500. http://www.thaiembassy.ca/uploads/ott09112015.pdf

From what I can see on the Vancouver site they are only showing the single entry visa requirements not the METV. The mention of the METV is only an announcement,

You might want to check with one of the honorary consulates for their requirements. See: http://www.thaiembassy.ca/en/visiting-thailand/visas/obtaining-visa-canada

Ah well, I suppose I'll just have to drop the Vancouver consulate a line and ask. But if you scroll down on the link I posted PAST the announcement they reference both single and multi-entry. With #2 "Validity of Tourist Visa", and #3 "Validity of Stay".

But I will email them now and ask them to be more clear.

We did the double entry visa thing in Vancouver last October 13th. Did not have to show them anything about income. The form just asked how much we made per year

Problem is that all the requirements are changing with the new METV. So I'm trying to figure out what they want from us now.
