Army Letter Demanding Free Booze a Forgery, Police Say

The photo of the purported army letter posted yesterday to the Facebook page “I Must Have Received 100 Million Baht from Thaksin.”

BANGKOK — A widely shared image said to be of a letter sent by an army unit in the northeast demanding a supply of free alcohol from a police station has been ruled as a forgery.

Col. Seksan Wattanapong, superintendent of the Khlong Luek Police Station in Sa Kaeo province, said he never received any letter about free booze from local military, as claimed by an anti-government Facebook page.

“It’s illogical. It’s ridiculous. It’s impossible,” Seksan said of the letter. “Why would they send a letter to demand a box of whiskey?”

The article left out the next sentence...."Extortion is our job, and we don't send no stinkin' letters".

It is quite ridiculous to send a letter to demand a free box of whisky. Even the most basic corrupt official would never put a demand like that in writing and actually sign it.

But how many people do you think believe it ?.

This is the problem for Thailand. Those people don't care about what might or might not be true. They just believe what they want to believe. That's what Thaksin meant when he said you can easily win their hearts : just tell them the right lies.

Some Thais still believe that the coup was to rid corruption. These 'some' just believe what they want to believe too.

Is this a forgery in the same way that the letter showing the breakdown of "costs/bribes/expenses" for Ratchapakdi Park was a forgery?

What is worse is a defense based on personal incredulity: "I can't believe they would do such a stupid thing, therefore they're innocent". That's the very definition of believing what you want to believe.

As with all internal Army matters, this is completely transparent, and no, we are not inclined to prove it one way or another.

The mere fact that some quite a lot of Thai people could believe such a thing is possible - this should be a shame for the Thai authorities.

Now who could possible benefit from discrediting the army and supporting the police?

With court cases looming, unfavorable results in trials of co-defendants, the Junta extending their grip and delaying elections, etc etc; maybe someone has decided it is time to put up or shut up.

Ohh, learry? They ain’t got no whiskeeee, no doubt about that. And that spirit is "completely transparent" or partially transparent, depending on which kind. “[We] hope that we will receive your generosity as usual [same, same as last year].” This is unthinkable.

Anyone on here who believes in this letter are just the typical ant-Thai 'that fits my ideals' dolts!.. the army demanded whiskey from the police.. yeah, that makes sense. Not. Only to divs. Well?.. who wants to put themselves happily in that category, then?.. (and, yes, I do live in the real world and might even have gone for that a bored unit marched on a BAR and made said demand!...)

Possibly. I know the owner of a small bar who occasionally pays the required bribes in beer instead of cash.

Military officers make a lot of money managing smuggling, skimming from government contracts, pocketing the pay of ghost soldiers, etc., but they can't get free booze as easily as the police. Perhaps someone was upset about that.
