Do Police Volunteers Get Work Permits Special Visa?

Featured Replies

I always wondered how the foreign police volunteer thing works. Since working or volunteering usually requires a work permit, do they get a work permit? If they do, who or what institution do they get it from? Do they then get what sort of Visa?

Not sure about the uniform commando's in pattaya.... But there are two farang translators working at lumpini station

Nice guys, very helpful ... From UK

I'm would imagine they get paid and a work permit if necessary but they don't dress up like g.i joe either :)

The work permit requirement is waived and they get no visas or extensions for doing it.

This is a bitter topic for many foreign police volunteers.

Fortunately many of them already have a 1 year visa due to a relationship and or a permanent job but some don't.

Few if any are paid, but they do a valuable service to the country.

There is facility under Thai law for them to get a 6 month visa extension, if they work 10 hours per week and get the Police to give them a visa sponsorship letter.

There is also the facility for them to be given Work Permits which sadly once again is very rare.

The attitude of the Police is that we are the law and you work for us and we aren't going to hurt you or arrest you so don't worry about it!

Still, not what they really want tho which is recognition?

the ones i have been in touch with here in Patong and Phuket town are worthless,

i was in 3 days ago to Patong for a re entry permit

the french lady didn't know much abut anything and kept telling people to ask the thai staff, who while i was there, asked me to explain to the tourist what they wanted.

Badbanker you are right,it came up during a meeting with both RTP and IMM.and nobody had a clear answer but the just said to not worry about it.

Maybe a good thing to not give workpermits or visa extensions, the police would be flooded with applications!

So even those of us on retirement extensions could volunteer for the police if we were so inclined, then?

I don't see why not. As long as you're fit enough!

Many years ago, I managed to get a volunteer visa for my police work, with my application supported by the local police bigwigs.

But that visa was just for 6 months, and no bigwigs were around when renewal time came up :(

Can someone tell me the best way to get in contact with the Tourist Police in Koh Samui? I've emailed them without any response. I tried their facebook page and got a response of "welcome to the tourist police"....whatever that means.

I've got law enforcement experience in Australia so I thought I could give them a hand? I'm also after a working permit.

I doubt you will get a work permit with the Tourist Police and if you do it will be specific to the job for which it is issued.

Is there any truth to being granted a 6 month period of stay if you work a minimum of 10 hours per week with the tourist police? More than happy to work more hours than that but obviously need to get in touch with the mob first.

Strikes me as highly unlikely. But only the "mob" (as you like to call them) and/or your local immigration office would, I suspect, be able to provide you with a definitive answer.

Why were you asking police volunteers for a re-entry permit ?

Most of them are acting out what they were unable to achieve in their home country.

The TP in the not so tourist areas are a complete waste of space, and also very limited when trying to speak, or understand another language. All they ever seem to do is take photos amongst foreigners.

Well I actually want to help out and be useful, I don't know about the others who decide to join. As mentioned, I'm currently in the law enforcement field so this isn't a case of 'a free power trip'. If anything, my work back home will benefit from this when I return at some point.

So just do it.. But no you wont get a WP or visa extension (might do after showing a few years service, well the visa anyway)..

The irony that every police volunteer breaks the law every time they operate is just Thailand in a nutshell..

You used to be able to buy all the copper gear across from the old Immigration station off Satorn rd in Bkk. They even had the lights to mount on a car...........

Why not just drop by at the HQ in Samui and maybe translate your resume into Thai.

Agree and once in a while a volunteer gets arrested too. This issue remembers me on a couple of newspapers in Pattaya, reporting crime in Pattaya but actually some of them had been in a jail already in Europe.

The Pattaya police is one of the most corrupted in Thailand, I wonder why those Farangs volunteers actually want to work with them. Power corrupts I guess.

They have one in CNX too.. Batons, extension batons.. mace.. tazers.. Handcuffs.. Batman belts.. Everything required for the hobby bobby in your life..

Amusingly its called the 'Big Man Shop' here.. No over compensating there at all wink.png

I am talking through experience here as I know so many who volunteered years ago.

You will be treated no better than any other farang. During your 'working' hours you will be treated quite nicely by them, they will always smile and be polite with you. The minute you walk out the door it is all forgotten and you are just another farang like all of us, and they will all be talking behind your back.
