Military junta says IS presence report unverified

74-wpcf_728x409.jpg

BANGKOK: -- The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) late today says a leaked official document reporting that the Russian intelligence agency has warned of the entry of 10 Syrian nationals with links to the Islamic State was still not verified if it was official document.

NCPO spokesman Col Winthai Suvaree said the document stamped “top secret” allegedly issued by the Special Branch Bureau is now under the verification process to probe if it really is authentic or forged.

He asked the public not to panic as so far security personnel could handle the situation.

Besides, he said intelligence personnel have not yet found any suspicious movement of IS terrorists in the country.

Spokesman of the Internal Security Operation Command Maj Gen Banphot Poonpien said Thailand is not a disputed country with any country and therefore the authenticity of the document is pending verification from persons mentioned in the document.

He said such unverified information could worry the public.

A Royal Thai Police spokesman admitted late afternoon that the Russian intelligence agency, the Federal Security Service or FSB, has alerted the Thai Special Branch Bureau of the entry of Syrian nationals with IS link.

However details of the report are still being checked by special branch police.

Russian honorary consul on Phuket confirmed receiving the FSB notification and has passed onto Gov and police, who confirm they are tightening security. So the report is confirmed, I assume the Thai spokesman means that they are trying to "verify" that the 10 people are in Thailand. Different kettle of fish.

Fairly detailed report, with numbers and locations, so seems credible. Actual report may have more detail, such as names and travel details that can be tracked.

"Spokesman of the Internal Security Operation Command Maj Gen Banphot Poonpien said Thailand is not a disputed country with any country and therefore the authenticity of the document is pending verification from persons mentioned in the document."

the terrorists are after russians and other actively fighting with isis.

they came to thailand, because thai emmigration is corrupt and they are able to come and go at will for 20k baht per stamp, no passport check for validity.

with thai security at shambles (erewan bombing is a proof), thailand is an easy choice for commiting atrocities. Inevitably, there would be thai citisens at risk. But the junta spokesman doesn't care about their countrymen, does he?

Thailand receives Russian warning of Islamic State threat
NATTASUDA ANUSONADISAI, Associated Press

BANGKOK (AP) — Thai police have received a warning from Russia's state security agency that 10 Syrians who may be linked to the Islamic State group could stage attacks in Thailand on targets associated with Russia and others opposed to the militants, officials said Friday.

National police deputy spokesman Col. Songpol Wattanachai confirmed the authenticity of a leaked police memo mentioning the intelligence warning. He told reporters that the information has not been verified.

The Thai capital was the target of a bombing in August that killed 20 people, which has been linked to militants from China's Muslim Uighur minority.

There have been few signs of IS activity in Thailand, though the group actively recruits volunteers from its Southeast Asian neighbors Malaysia and Indonesia — which are predominantly Muslim — to fight in Syria and Iraq.

The police memo, dated Nov. 17 and marked "urgent" and "confidential," cites Russia's Federal Security Service FSB warning that the 10 Syrians believed to be involved with Islamic State entered Thailand in the second half of October. According to the memo, some of them went to Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket.

Pattaya and Phuket are seaside resorts popular with foreign tourists, and Pattaya is especially popular with Russians.

"The objectives of these people are to cause harm to Russia's assets or those of its allies in Thailand," said the memo.

The police memo called on security officials to confirm the information and step up security at possible targets related to countries opposed to IS, specifically the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Sweden and Australia.

Police spokesman Songpol said that after October's deadly attacks in Paris, security had already been stepped up at venues in Bangkok such as embassies. He said the information was the first Thailand had received suggesting that IS-linked Syrians had entered the country.

Last week no IS in Thailand....now a warning saying they were here almost 3 weeks ago......this type of security really does little to garner confidence in security systems here!

Only 3 weeks, luckily there was some urgency attached to it...

It would seem that the government are "creating" a story for their own purpose here. Why is it getting so much coverage? The Russians had no idea about their own terrorist attacks, so how the heck do they supposedly know about Thailand? Something fishy going on here doc!

Shall we soon see troops on the streets again?

You think the Thais would make up a story of a possible terrorist attack, with all the incumbent problems that causes tourism....

Thailand has ZERO interest in fabricating terrorist threats on TOURISTS. Tourism is a key industry here and the economy is already weak.

The tin foil hat conspiracy theories suggesting they do are absurd.

Exactly. And as far as I can tell that was after 17 November, the date of the memo!

Well, a few months back the PM was even talking about "closing the country", so he doesn't seem to care about tourists or Thailand's reputation abroad.

Ever heard of the saying 'there's no smoke without fire'? What a nitwit. "... security personnel could handle the situation."??? Really? I won't hold my breath. This isn't some coloured-shirt vigilante lobbing a firecracker into a dustbin when no one is around. These IS/ISIL/ISIS morons mean business.

Tell that to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner who today could not say if the 'leaked' document was fake or not, and followed up by mentioning people who want to harm the economy.

That's the only conspiracy theory I've read about...so whose tin foil hat are you referring to?

But he walked that back quickly.

Yes but to late, many people now know the truth. He meant what he said.

IS may be in Thailand already.

But what is certain is that there are already some sympathizers of those extremists in the country.

I mean Thais, not Syrians or other foreigners.

The image I attach was uploaded by one of the sons of someone I know I Phang Nga.

It translates into "Islam will occupy the world very soon. Wait and see".

The boy is around 20 years old.

Quite worrying.
