Singha Corp establishes the latest joint venture, Singha Sanko Co,

BANGKOK: SINGHA CORPORATION has set a vision to become one of the top three players in the snack market in Thailand and CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam) within five years.

The company expects its total sales from snack business to surge dramatically from Bt1.2 billion last year to Bt1.5 billion this year. Annual sales will double to Bt3 billion within three years and reach between Bt6 billion and Bt7 billion in five years.

"In addition to our organic growth, we are looking for acquisition and joint-venture possibilities with snack manufacturers both in Thailand and at the regional level," said Roj Muangkroot, managing director of Hesco Food Industry, a subsidiary of Singha Corp.

"However, they have to share our business philosophy so as to focus on quality snacks that are made from local ingredients and contribute healthy solutions to consumers."

Hesco makes Nature Bite cereal snacks, Max Snax rice crackers, and Coco Jazz coconut chips.

Roj said Singha president and chief executive officer Santi Bhirombhakdi had given the vision for the company to increase the revenue contribution from its food and beverage businesses. The company also wants to become a key player in F&B business at the regional and global levels in the future.

Singha Corp has two major snack subsidiaries, Thai-Korean Seaweed Co, which produces Mashita seaweed snacks, and Hesco Food Industry.

The company on Tuesday will announce a new joint venture, Singha Sanko Co, which will consist of three major partners - Singha Corp, Hesco Food Industry, and Sanko Seika - for the production of Yuki rice crackers.

Both Hesco Food Industry and Singha Sanko will have production facilities on 24 rai (3.84 hectares) at Bang Na-Trat Road Kilometre 19, with combined capacity of about 6,000 tonnes of snacks per year. Meanwhile, Thai-Korean Seaweed has a plant in Pathum Thani for the production of Mashita seaweed snacks.

"Our snack products currently contribute between 15 and 20 per cent of Singha Corp's F&B business. I myself would like to increase the sales contribution of snacks to about 30 per cent of the company's F&B business within three years," Roj said.

He added that Singha Corp targeted its sales of snack products to reach Bt1.5 billion this year, of which about Bt500 million will be from exports. The company expects exports to account for 50 per cent of its snack sales within three years.

Roj said Singha Corp had seen great potential for the snack business, which fits in well with today's lifestyles, especially for people living in cities as they have limited time for proper meals.

The overall snack market in Thailand is anticipated to be worth more than Bt25 billion this year.
