SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA – Australian Fraser Thomson won the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon on Sunday, followed by Japanese-Cambodian comedian Hiroshi Neko, as more than 8,500 runners from 75 countries competed in the annual event in Cambodia.

In the women’s race, Singaporean Vivian Tang crossed the finish line first.

Neko, whose real name is Kuniaki Takizaki, was born in Japan and became a naturalized Cambodian citizen in 2011.

The Angkor Wat International Half Marathon was first introduced by Yuko Arimori, the first Japanese woman to win a marathon medal at the Olympics.

Arimori, a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Population Fund and a representative director of nongovernmental agency Hearts of Gold, won the silver medal at the Barcelona Games in 1992 and bronze at Atlanta in 1996.

Including this year, she has taken part 19 times in this international half marathon in Cambodia to contribute to fundraising for land mine victims and the poor.
