BANGKOK: -- Special Branch police knew who was responsible for leaking to the media an intelligence report about the presence of suspected ISIS terrorists in Thailand, Special Branch deputy commissioner Pol Maj-Gen Pittaya Sirilak said Tuesday.

He said that internal investigation was still underway with several Special Branch police officers being questioned. He said he didn’t believe the leaker had ill intention but if it could be proven that the leakage of the confidential information was intentional, the officer concerned would face criminal and disciplinary actions as well as civil lawsuit.

The intelligence information about suspected ISIS terrorists among Syrians in Thailand was passed on by Russian intelligence agency to its Thai counterpart.

Four Syrians have, so far, questioned by Thai security officials. They were all cleared of any links with ISIS although they were found to have overstayed their visas.

Probably have spent more man hours searching for the whistleblower than the actual terrorists. Pathetic.

If not for the whistleblower, would the public have been told ANYTHING about the potential threat? Or would the RTP just wait for an attack and gracelessly fumble their way through another cover-up?

I wonder what they do with officers who are transferred to an inactive post and manage to screw up there ?

Move the perpetrator of this heinous crime to an inactive post......they need someone to supervise a recount of the paperclips.

They worry so much about who releases this information instead of finding the 10 who actually are the terrorists and still on the loose in Thailand. In a related article even Briton has put Thailand on red alert for their citizens and the chance of being targeted.

Heads still firmly up their own backsides, priorities straight, and all is well with the world.

Can't wait to see the new Constitution draft in 2020 ...

​Thailand aside, do you think it is realistic for your own intelligence services to inform the population of the country with every snippet of received intelligence communication they have?

As for the person who leaked the information, this person should have a lot to answer for. And for the authorities to even think along the lines of "....he didn’t believe the leaker had ill intention...." is ridiculous. IMHO, this person should be dismissed their position immediately, not just for generating mass hysteria and uncalled for speculation by the release but for the revelation of nationally classified documentation.

Although it may hurt the egos of some, just because we all have mobile media in our lives now, it doesn't mean everybody has the right to know everything.

The rocket scientists from "special" branch know! Even special olympians could work out that any country with muslims living in it is likely to have a terrorist presence...

If these "special" police beleive that informing the public of something should be a greater crime than the crime itself. Then maybe it's thailand got some unspecial police.

What, exactly, is the value of telling the public about the potential threat? If there's a real credible threat that they can do something to avoid, then there's reason to warn the public. Otherwise there are literally thousands of potential threats every day. Your kid's sniffles might mutate into a pandemic that kills millions. There's a potential threat for you. What you gonna do?

It seems that most BIB are either too busy extorting money out of folks, or are practicing REAL HARD for an inactive post position to worry about terrorism threats.

This is actually true. When I'd asked where a notorious police captain on Phuket had gone I'd been told 'transferred to Yala, for promotion'

My guess is, that with the cat out of the bag, they will loose face big time should a terrorist attack now happen, as it will show the total ineptitude of the RTP, yet again.

By keeping it secret they could pretend to be surprised when an attacks occurs.

When they hail the wrongdoer and attack the whistleblower - there is something going terribly wrong in a society.
