180 days to thailand with Single entry ED Visa

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding my visa. For my internship, which will start of Feb 1st I will stay in BKK and work as an Intern, therefore I have a single entry ED visa. Now my question is, how does it work with the visa extension? Can I simply extend at the Immigration Office after 83 days? Or do I have to do a visa run? According to a friend who is currently in BKK it is not as easy as i.e. this guide: http://www.bangkokfaces.com/articles/6/how-to-extend-your-ed-visa-in-thailand .

Hopefully someone can enlighten me on this question,

Thank you in advance,

You will not be able to get an extension unless your internship is being done through a university here.

The info you posted is for a tourist visa entry.

You may be able to get another single entry non-ed visa at a nearby embassy or consulate.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately It isn't done via a University, except the university in my home country of course. But why would they recommend a single entry ED visa? I asked for a multiple entry at the Thai embassy, but that was not possible.. Not sure why, hel told me but it was very vague.

You cannot legally work on an ED Visa....what will you be doing ?

An embassy would not know the rules for getting an extension from immigration. You are not the first person that has had this happen.

I will be working as an (paid) intern at an international company in BKK. According to the Thai embassy site an ED should be fine for this:

This type of visa is issued to applicants who wish to study, attend seminar, training session, or internship in Thailand.

Ok..fair enough. To get an ED visa, first you need to get a NON-Immigrant Type ED visa good for 90 days. This can only be done with a massive packet of docs from your school.

Near the 90 day point you can then (with another packet of docs) extend that Visa for the duration of your internship/study. you should be given all you need....call your University and get them cracking.

Thanks for your reply. I indeed got around 40-50 documents from my internship company. With those (and a letter from my hometown unviersity) I was able to get the Non-ED visa. So If I am in BKK and near the 90 days, I can extend it at the immigration office or outside of thailand?

Immigration Office inside Thailand...with requisite docs of course from your institution/employer

There is no provision in the police order for extensions of stay for a internship done through a foreign university.

But somehow he was able to get a 90 day ED visa with docs from said foreign Uni ?

My guess is they have some local affiliate approved by the Ministry of Education ?

All the documents were provided by the company. The University has no relations with the Thai government. I only provided the consulate with a letter that states that I am a student at the university and that the internship is a part of the study program.

There are different rules for getting a visa and an extension of stay.

Am embassy can issue the visa with supporting documents from a university where they are located.

A visa grants permission to enter the country and remain for a specified period of time. An extension of stay grants permission to remain in the country for a specified period of time after the visa has expired. The conditions for receiving each are different.
