HAT YAI: -- The driver of a passenger van and five passengers narrowly escaped death after the vehicle rammed into the rear of a ten-wheel truck and caught fire.

The accident took place on Tuesday on the out-bound Asian highway in Tambon Tha Chang between Hat Yai and Bang Klam district.

It was not known who was at fault for the accident as police were investigating the case.

The van left Hat Yai for Thung Song in Surat Thani province with five passengers on board. For reason yet to be determined, the van slammed into the rear of a truck and caught fire.

The five passengers managed to scramble out of the van but the driver who got stuck behind the steering wheel was helped out by the truck driver and other witnesses. He sustained burns on his legs.

It's a rear-end collision. The cause? Inattention, following too close and excessive speed. The van driver will say his brakes failed. Next.

Indeed. The passengers were lucky they got out unharmed.

Fault of the accident, brake failure, inattentive driving, sleeping, stupidity or maybe even that the 10 wheeler was backing down the road at high speed straight into the front of the van.

What ever the reason, looking at the front of the van seems the passengers were very lucky.

No doubt the ten wheeler was driving in reverse in the fast lane. Can't blame the van driver as the truck was in his way.

Amazing nobody was killed.

Seems we have sorted out the cause - should we inform the BIB or just leave it in their capable hands.
