In 2015, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs rescued 118 Cambodian women trapped in China and Malaysia, ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said yesterday. Eighty brides from China that were deceived by a broker and handed over to Chinese men, as well as 38 maids from Malaysia, were freed and brought back to Cambodia.

“Recently, the ministry brought back five women from Malaysia who went there through a Malaysian company, and the company agreed to give them back their money. While they were working, they came to seek help after having difficulties with their landlord,” Mr. Sounry said.

Today, three women, two from Kandal province and one from Kampong Cham, will return to the Kingdom after spending months trapped in China. They went to China after a broker promised them jobs and potential husbands. They were held as house workers until they escaped to the Cambodian Embassy in Beijing. Mr. Sounry said more women will be returning as well.
