PHUKET: -- In the wake of an anonymous complaint to the Governor's Office, officials seized about 100 illegal beach mats and umbrellas from Surin Beach this morning.

“We sent a team of about 30 officers in a joint mission to the beach after receiving a complaint that the beach vendors were breaking the rules,” Cherng Talay Police Superintendent Serm Kwannimit told the Phuket Gazette.

All beach furniture was banned on Surin Beach following pushy vendors breaching the 10 per cent zone, which had originally allowed them to offer services in designated areas. Following the ban, the beach was dubbed a ‘Beach of Honor’ to mark HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej and HM Queen Sirikit’s visit to its sands in 1959 (story here).

“None of the vendors claimed ownership of the items, so nobody has been charged. However, all the beach furniture was confiscated and taken to the police station,” said Col Serm. “We are not picking on anyone. We are just enforcing the law. If vendors want the items back, they can collect them at the station and be charged with encroaching on public land.”

Glad to see that the military are coming down hard on these unscrupulous beach vendors!!!

In every other country the military has better things to do than this.

How embarrassing.

PHUKET: -- Officials raided the sands of Surin Beach this morning (Dec 22) and seized 98 items, mainly sunbed mats and umbrellas from vendors who rent them out to tourists. However, no arrests were made.

MaAnn Samran, head of the Cherng Talay Tambon Adinistration Organisation (OrBorTor), led the raid, which he said was ordered by Cheng Talay Police Chief Col Serm Khwannimit.

The operation, which was touted to clear the beach of all vendors, began at 9am, with officers seizing 67 cushions, 22 umbrellas, three mats and six small pillows that vendors provided to tourists.

No arrests were made since no one came forward to claim any of the items, which were taken to Cherng Talay Police Station, where owners may come to claim them, The Phuket News was told.

Why is no one pointing at the mats? coffee1.gif

Maybe they can't see them

I need a few more beach mats for my hotel. Do you think the police would sell some to me for a few baht under the table?

clap2.gif I really wish they do the same on Pattaya-Jomtien Beaches!!!!!!!! Those thousands of chairs and ugly umbrellas covering all sea view must be removed and not just for one day as it is now!!!! Btw these chairs and beach beds are nearly all empty (90% at least).

It's no need to prohibit but beds & chairs must be done JUST on request and where the guest need it.

And sure not covering all beaches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!wai2.gif

I think they are crazy! Have you seen the beaches of Pattaya an Jomtien on wednesdays? Almost deserted, Wonder who´s gaining from that?

A nice day on the beach for me includes a chair, umbrella, being able to get a beer, food and sometimes a footmassage with pedicure.

This is great news.

Its exactly what the TVF community wanted and now its happening and the jubilation and high-5's to the Thai Gov't for continued enforcement is staggering.

What...wait...thats not what is happening? The noise is not ebulant cheering but more TVF snivelling?

Thailand might be changing for the better but the TVF community never will.
