I have 3 ubc boxes in my house. They cost 7-8,000 baht each. The guy whop supplied me was a free lance, but he also supplied the splitter box and installed them - it's quite complicated, because you also need a special phone cable run to the sets (not regular phone line as it has more strands).

Presumably any specialist shop would have them.

As you probably know, you just pay UBC for one subscription.

The boxes I have a Samart, and I ain't a happy Mobi. I have had them about 10 months. One blew up about 2 months ago, and a a couple of weeks ago the second one went. They are under guarantee but have to be sent to Bangkok for repair amd never reappear. I gave up on the first one and had it fixed outside the gurantee for 1,000 baht, and am still awaiting the return of the second one.

Suggest you look for a different brand of box, and on that basis cannot really recommend my supplier, but will give you his number if you want.

Officially you can only get up to 3 boxes in 1 house, and for each additional box you'll pay 438 Baht/month extra (155 box rental + 282 for the channels). This is not included in the price for any of the packages including platinum!

You'll also pay 9000 Baht per extra box installed.

UBC currently issues a new model smartcard which prevents the sharing of them with a box like Mobi describes! I know, I have one of the new cards :o . Obviously UBC likes to see the revenue from that extra subscription fee!

You still can do this if you have one of the older UBC cards, but nobody knows when UBC is going to mail out the new cards to their subscribers and phaze out the older ones.

Interesting. I just got another box like you, same pricing, digital I am told although cant find anything saying so. When it was hooked up I checked the signal input [ menu - setup - receiver info - signal value ] and it was -42 db which was bad. the ubc tech pulled out a coupler about an inch square [no electrical connection] and the signal jumped to -22 db and the picture was considerably better. so if you are having the same problem i did this is how to fix it.

I was told by the maker of those boxes that you can use up to 5 receivers on the new UBC smartcards.

This was a few months ago, maybe it changed?

Monty,

I was led to believe that my UBC set up was perfectly legal - the guy who arranged it all and sold me the boxes etc, also gave me the UBC paperwork. He also told me I could have additional boxes if I wanted.

From what you are now saying it would seem that I have been misled. :o

So if they change my smart card then presumably I would have to pay the extra 282 Baht for the channels per box, but surely I don't have to pay the rental as I own the boxes? And presumably no installation charges? :D

As ever, your input and expertise are gratefully acknowledged.

You most definately were misled!

As you can see on the link I posted above UBC charges for extra boxes! (they have to according to their re-transmission rights for the channels they carry).

The only legal extensions you can do is with a set-up where you can remotely control the main box, because then all television sets show the same channel!

According to this link

http://www.ubctv.com/eng/GetUBC_PurchaseEquipment.aspx

you can indeed buy equipment, so you wouldn't have to pay the rental. Itdoes however state this price does not include installation (1500 Baht).

I'm not sure you can get the cards seperate without them having sold their boxes to you and done the installation...
