Situation on human rights has improved: top official

BANGKOK: -- THE human rights situation in Thailand has improved judging from greater public participation in protecting people’s rights as well as the promulgation and enforcement of related laws, said Charnchao Chaiyanukij, acting permanent secretary at the Justice Ministry.

This year saw many occasions when Thai people rallied to demand their basic human rights, he said.

He was speaking at the opening ceremony of a meeting of authorities preparing the country's human rights report to be submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in February.

"The general picture of the human rights situation in the country has become better and tangible. The issue is not just in the book, it is now tangible. There are new laws enforced to protect the basic human rights of people," he said.

He added that the report will gather the opinions and ideas of all parties concerned as well as reflect the trend of the issue next year.

Referring to calls from international organisations regarding political human rights, he said the issue is one of the challenges facing the government, which has to create understanding and handle it in constructive ways.

Meanwhile, Chunchom Jintayanon, deputy director-general of the Rights and Liberties Protection Department, said Thailand would be open to suggestions from other UNHRC members after submitting the report. "We will consider the recommendations and whether they suit our country or not. For example, one of them said Thailand should cancel the death sentence. We do not accept it but we're not ignoring it, as we are studying it to find a solution," she said.

Improved??? I believe UN, EU, USA (including their Ambassador) Amnesty International, Finwatch, Swedwatch, UNHCR (and many other) will not agree to that MR Chaiyanukij.

Oops! I just "Liked" your post. Might get me tossed in the clink if you edit it.

'Human Rights' implies a bit of freedom to speak one's mind.

Freedom indeed.

Free to protest those pesky farang envoys.......but nothing else!!!!!!

That is Uncle T's (or should I say Mr. T's) way of bringing about unity, is to just hate everyone.

Then folks will unite under a global uprising, entitled "You Don't Understand".

Mind numbing and sweepingly breath taking in scope of its audacity.

"Creating understanding"" a terminology for not only excusing criticisms of draconian laws which sentence people to jail for thirty years or more over freedoms of speech denials , but implying a lack of understanding or ignorance on our part .

Then other lines about if ""it suits "" their country.

The time has come to slap them with many punitive sanctions.

Treat it as the South Africans once were.

This propaganda on their behalf is so entrenched and out of touch with reality no other solution is available.

Kids are getting arrested over liking a post on Facebook .

No democracy on horizon.

Absolute rule.

Fear

Double standards .( see ultra National protests that are allowed , ironically against west)

Slaves

Death camps

Lowest human rights tier ( three)

Kangaroo courts .

Corruption .

Media restrictions

Adjustment camps.

Deaths of opponents in custody .

Envoy's being investigated .

History rewritten.

China courted .

Sure you guys are doing just fine.

Now it's time you were taught a lesson about the real world .

And in 2016 that will occur .

No matter what you say

One could suggest he was reading out the report that this so-called meeting of authorities is supposed to prepare for submission to UNHCR.

To be a true representation of Thailand's concept of HR, their report should start with "Once upon a time ...", and conclude with "... and they all lived happily ever after"!

What is this man smoking?

"...This year saw many occasions when Thai people rallied to demand their basic human rights, he said..."

...and many of them arrested, hounded or brought in for attitude adjustments.

no bias there then... forget about the shrimp slaves, the lack of freedom of speech, lack of gatherings (unless you are yellow and outside the US Embassy) and forget no elections

It's comforting to know 99.3% Thais back him

The situation has improved , can we have a validation of that fact from the Human Rights watch dog the UN , anyone voicing an opinion out of Thailand would be expelled or asked to attend brain washing classes , so the validation would need to be outside of Thailand's borders, so much for human rights , next subject.........................................coffee1.gif .

There were times when they at least tried to mask their lies.

"The general picture of the human rights situation in the country has become better and tangible."

Shouldn't it read: The general's... ?

May I recommend to the gentleman to read some reports from TLHR (Thai Lawyers for Human Rights) first before he opens his mouth?

For who's interested, here's just one out of many reports:

Reports mean nothing to the junta. They will just deny and make a press statement that the reports are irresponsible and have political motivation.

It is a sad state of affairs, but I am afraid that the time has long passed when a "top official" can make such a statement and have any credibility on the world stage. Any "progress" will have to be verified by NGO's, the UN agencies, the EU, or individual countries. I get the feeling sometimes that the Government would be better served to convene a conference and ask for specific help regarding exactly what needs to be done. Everyone knows there are a lot of reasons that the current government has for thinking that real progress is not possible, but If the Thai government is willing to be straight on these issues, maybe they can get some assistance to make the necessary changes.

I am fully aware that I am standing on the stern of boat in a strong following wind trying to take a pee, but miracles are always possible.
