BANGKOK: -- The government of Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has performed satisfactorily on economy winning 7 scores out of 10, Dr Thanawat Polwichai, director of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC)'s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting.

He said the government has performed over average on its economic performance, following an assessment of its performance in the past year.

The satisfactory performance was achieved despite the fact that the government had faced many difficult obstacles including the global economic slowdown, problems linked to terrorism, and the conflict between Turkey and Russia which have impacted the Thai export sector.

The government also faced internal problems such as the drought situation and the declining price of agricultural goods.

But he said the government has handled these problems well with the issuance of various measures to tackle economic situation.

This would enable the Thai economy to grow by 3 percent this year.

He said with the satisfactory performance, it deserved a score of 7 out of 10 for its economic performance.

He even forecast stronger economic recovery and 3.5% growth on the over 200 billion baht money generated from the 4G auctions, and implementation of mega projects next year, as well as the ASEAN Economic Community.

Nonsense. The economy is in tatters, FDI has taken flight, prices up wages stagnant, unemployment is rising and the gap between rich and poor continues to widen. Where does this guy publish his assumptions and measurements? No good just stating bland phrases and buzwords to say that the government is doing an acceptable job. Anyway it is not to be believed purely on the fact that this body is funded by the government, so what else is he going to say?

As Thailand is an emerging economy and will stay that way for some time , can we have a more accurate assumption or reconciliation from a reputable organization like the IMF , their analysis would be more correct...................................................coffee1.gif

Why does this guy remind me of the expats on TV who tell us how wonderful their Thai wives are - as in " my Thai wife is beautiful, white skinned, educated, wealthy, totally devoted to me and has never been near a bar. In fact she scores 9.9 out of ten"

Same level of credibility ?

"....the government has handled these problems well with the issuance of various measures to tackle economic situation."

Issuance of various measures indeed.

What an accomplishment!

A complete re-vamp of the BOI, reducing FDI investments to $200,000 to qualify would bring a FLOOD of prosperity, in the short term.

Proper, fair, non-xenophobic FDI laws, along with a competent police force would be a true accomplishment for the longer term.

Reduce import taxes to a sane level (if one exists...make it the same as VAT).

OPEN UP TO THE WORLD!!!!

The place is under mafia rule though, where any day that Petey doesn't kill Pauly is considered an 'Achievement'.

No worries for us farangs though. We safe Thailand Safe Touris safe.
