KHON KAEN: -- Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division police yesterday arrested a man after he posted sales of several protected and endangered wildlife species on the internet.

Police identified the man, a resident of Khon Kaen province, as Tanawat Kongchomchaiwat.

He was arrested at his home in Prayuen district of Khon Kaen.

Seized from a search in his house were three Burmese star tortoises, and a number of Sulcata tortoises, and Marmoset monkeys.

All are on the Appendix 1 of Cites list of protected species.

Police said the three Burmese star tortoises had religious mark on their roofs which matched the tortoises which Burmese authorities have sought cooperation from Thai authorities to help look for after they were stolen from a Myanmar wildlife conservation centre.

Police said the suspect posted to sell the Burmese star tortoise at 30,000-50,000 baht for each on the internet.

Police began tracking the man from his post and latter made arrest at his home in Khon Kaen.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Not saying he is Einstein, but he likely had no idea that Star Spangled Turtles were an endangered species....I didn't.

A bit of education might have led him to Google it first, so....who knows? Maybe he is a crook? I don't know.

He had more than the turtles and the story implies the turtles he was selling were recently stolen.

The guy is an idiot, I'm only surprised he didn't try to sell the turtles on facebook.

Madagascar has a solution, they hunt down all such creatures in the wild and carve numbers into the shell. thus defacing them for life. The program is proving very successful - perhaps these little fellas could be carved a bit to save their lives.

Sad world we live in as there is no shortage of demand for them...

Thanks. I missed the 'stolen' part of the headline.

You can be assured if he was trading in them and asking 30,000 baht per turtle that he know they where under Cities.

You did not because you do not trade in them Can you name 8 species that are restricted without checking

I think not

Great to see the police going after this type of criminal activity.

No. I cannot, which why anybody with half a brain would check to see if there were any restrictions before posting Florida Black Bear Bladder Bile for sale, or Star Spangled turtles for sale or Elephants Tusks for sale on the internet.

I also have no earthly idea what 'under Cities' means either.

I do however have a cross breed Maltese squirrel certified killer I'll happily part with for 50,000 baht.

Nah. She's my buddy. I just hope she's not 'under Cities' ?????

Even Stupid isnt that stupid... He was an insult to Stupid.

They've been tattooing bar girls for years, same principle....still no shortage of demand for them either.

I'm guessing cities is c.....international trade in endangered species?

Or something of that ilk.

I would google it but I'm trying to work stuff out for myself these days. Well at least up to New Years anyway. ;-).
