"Since November we know there's a handful of people ready to act against the population."

PARIS: -- Police in France say they’ve foiled a plot to carry out a gun attack on police and soldiers in the city of Orleans.

The interior minister says two young Frenchmen, believed to have been in contact with a third man in Syria, are being questioned.

It’s reported the men planned to attack a military barracks and police stations and seize weapons.

France has been on its highest alert for terrorism since the gun and bomb attacks killed 130 people in Paris.

Olivier Carré, the Mayor of Orleans, told reporters: “Since November we know there’s a handful of people ready to act against the population.

“It is not a surprise that this happens in Orleans because this can happen in all French cities.”

France’s interior minister says some 10 attacks have been prevented in the country this year.

A state of emergency is still in force and extra security is in place over the festive season.
